Did you spend the weekend decorating your front yard with lights? Before you show it off, check out these tips from Patch photographer Edward Maurer. Maurer recommends a tripod, a timer and a camera with the ability to adjust the shutter speed. Of 24 finalists in the holiday lights contest, one will earn $100,000 for their public school district.
The local winners of the Deck the House holiday lights contest have been narrowed down to 24 national finalists, eligible to win a $100,000 donation for their public school district. Although there are no Michigan homes in the final pool of 24, we celebrate the local winners, including: To vote for one of the homes competing nationally to win a $100,000 donation for their lucky public school district, visit www.deckthehouse.patch.com/entries. A special thank you to everyone who entered and/or voted. You've made our dark nights more festive and "oooh-worthy" this holiday season. National voting continues through 9 p.m. ET Jan. 8.

Patch.com is launching a nationwide contest to find the best dressed home in its Patch communities, and the winner’s school district will receive $100,000, no strings attached. Here’s how the contest works. Beginning on Dec. 8 and continuing through Dec. 26, you can nominate your home by uploading a photo to the contest entry form on the site. During that same time period you and your neighbors will also be able to vote for your favorite festive home. The winning entry will be forwarded to a national Patch judge that will select 24 finalists. Each finalist will receive $500 that they can apply to their December electric bill.
