Local Man Lives a Dream as Detroit Lions Photographer

Gavin Smith, of Fenton, has a dream job with the Detroit Lions, but the position takes hard work, dedication and creativity.

After opening a second studio, surviving a grinding wedding season and taking thousands of senior pictures, a fall Sunday sounds like a great time for an average professional photographer to put their feet up and relax. However, Fenton’s Gavin Smith is not your average professional photographer. A fall Sunday means more lenses, lighting, pressure to be at his best and another a full day of work, with perhaps a little fun mixed in along the way. Smith serves as the officials Detroit Lions photographer, a position he earned in 2006. While it sounds like a glorious job, and Smith loves every bit of it, it’s still a stressful position, especially when he hasn’t had a day off in three weeks. Pre-game warm-up Smith doesn’t wait until kickoff to …

Should Nickelback Perform at the Lions' Thanksgiving Day Game?

Rock band's scheduled appearance has drawn the ire of Detroit Lions' fans.

Nickelback? Step back! In the past, Detroit Lions fans have had plenty to complain about on the field, from Scott Mitchell and Joey Harrington to Bobby Ross and Marty Mornhinweg. But now that quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson have helped the Lions to a 6-2 start this season, Lions fans have a new complaint: the band on the field at halftime for this year’s Thanksgiving Day showdown against the Green Bay Packers. Dennis Guttman, a student at the University of Michigan, has started a petition to ask the Lions to drop Nickelback from the rock band’s scheduled appearance at the Nov. 24 game. The petition rails against the group, asking "Does anyone even like Nickelback?" One commenter, Eva Blankinship, said she …

'Monday Night Football' or 'Dancing With The Stars'?

ABC pushes popular dance show to the wee hours to broadcast Detroit Lions-Chicago Bears game tonight. Do you care?

Tonight the Detroit Lions (4-0) are hosting a regular-season Monday Night Football game for the first time in a decade. The game would normally air on ESPN, but due to the expected large viewer turnout, ABC, which owns ESPN, is choosing to televise the 8:30 p.m. game against the Chicago Bears (2-2) on its Detroit network affiliate station WXYZ-TV. The decision bumps Monday night's two-hour broadcast of Dancing with the Stars to 2 a.m. Royal Oak Patch conducted an unofficial poll in downtown Royal Oak yesterday to find out what local TV viewers would rather watch, Dancing with the Stars or Monday Night Football? The majority of those people polled were not aware of the Dancing With The Stars time change, or seemed to care. While speaking to…

I don't feel it was necessary to pre-empt Dancing, when the game was already being televised on ESPN. Anyone who's fan enough probably has cable or went to the sports bar. I hope this doesn't happen often in the future.   more ›

Detroit, Chicago Zoos Wager on Lions vs. Bears

Detroit Zoo Executive Director Ron Kagan and Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo President Kevin Bell bet on tonight's 'Monday Night Football' game.

Bragging rights for the winner of tonight's Monday Night Football game between the Detroit Lions (4-0) and the Chicago Bears (2-2) go beyond the gridiron with the city's zoos pouncing on the action. Detroit Zoo Executive Director Ron Kagan sent an email to Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo President Kevin Bell that asked, "What if we wager on Monday night's game? Lions win and you send us enrichment for the lions here, Bears win and we'll send you a nice treat for your bears." Replied Bell, "You're on!"  On Wednesday as part of a daily enrichment program at the Detroit Zoo, and to celebrate the Detroit Lions hosting a regular-season Monday Night Football game for the first time in a decade, zoo officials inroduced a meat-filled piñata to the …

Lions Eat a Chicago Bear at Detroit Zoo (and No One Got Hurt!)

Zookeepers get psyched for annual rivalry football game in unusual way.

It was the lions vs. a Chicago Bear at the Detroit Zoo today, and the lions came out on top. As part of a daily enrichment program at the Detroit Zoo, and to celebrate the Detroit Lions (4-0) hosting a regular-season Monday Night Football game for the first time in a decade, zoo officials introduced a meat-filled piñata to the lions today.  The piñata was shaped like a Chicago Bears (2-2) football player and placed on the grounds of the lions exhibit. More than 50 people gathered to watch as the lions entered the exhibit and slowly paced around the piñata. A lioness was the first to pick up the scent.  As she moved quickly to the piñata, a male lion was close behind.  The female slowly paced around the piñata. She backed away when the male…

Royal Oak Woman Takes on Fight to Boost Pancreatic Cancer Research

Gael Sandoval lost her husband, Ricky, who was the security director for the Detroit Lions, to the disease two years ago. Tuesday, she visits Washington, DC, to tell lawmakers why they need to put more resources toward funding and research.

Gael Sandoval found herself leafing through instruction manuals one recent night when her newly installed sprinkler system refused to give her lawn a much-needed drink of water after a long day of 90-degree heat. “If I don't get this fixed, I'm going to have a yard full of dead grass,” the Royal Oak resident said. “It's one of the things my husband used to do and now I just have to learn to do it.” Sandoval's husband Ricky Sandoval lost his battle to pancreatic cancer on July 2, 2009 – 37 months after his diagnosis and just two days after his 49th birthday. Sandoval took action less than a year after losing her beloved husband, who was director of security for the Detroit Lions, signing on as an affiliate for the Pancreatic Cancer Action …

Celebrity Softball Game Raises Money for Youth

Jalen Rose, Rasheed Wallace, Lomas Brown, Derrick Williams and 'Detroit 1-8-7' actress Erin Cummings were just a few of the stars who came out to Memorial Park to pitch for a worthy cause.

Hundreds of sports fanatics and autograph seekers gathered in Memorial Park in Royal Oak this afternoon for the battle between the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Lions in the second annual Celebrity Softball Game. Organizers Charlie Villanueva of the Pistons and Derrick Williams of the Lions joined their teammates and other celebrities, including Detroit 1-8-7 actress Erin Cummings, for the fundraising event. Proceeds will benefit the players' respective charities as well as the Royal Oak Sandlot League. Gates opened at 2 p.m. with lots to do for fans, such as face painting, bouncy inflatables, games and photo ops. Michael Abdenour, 18 of Grosse Pointe, got a photo of the Pistons’ championship trophy. Abdenbour was there with his father Mike …
