Additional menu items include cotton candy, fried fruit pies, funnel-cake bites, beverages and other treats. Detroit Popcorn, which opened March 30, is located across from Rackham Fountain in the space formerly occupied by Kijiji Café. The concession is managed by Service Systems Associates (SSA), operator of concessions, retail and grounds services for the Detroit Zoological Society. “The Detroit Zoo and Detroit Popcorn are the perfect combination, two Detroit traditions that have been popular with the community …

Zoos around the country, including the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, turn to Ilana Kutinsky for help with their gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans.
While many visit the zoo to spend a leisurely day strolling through the exotic animal exhibits, Dr. Ilana Kutinsy heads to the apes to listen to their hearts. Kutinsky, 44, cardiologist at Beaumont Hospital, helped start the Great Ape Heart Project, which is the first database of its kind on primate hearts, and has been collecting data for 12 years. She is one of the science and technology leaders whom Patch is highlighting in recognition of Women's History Month. "Now we treat apes for what we think is heart disease," she said. "It translates to them living longer." Her attraction to hearts has been around since she learned their physiology. There aren't, however, many women in her field. "There are four female electrophysiologists in the…

Volunteers will work with zoo staff delivering school supplies.

National Amphibian Conservation Center offers rare glimpse of life cycle.
Catch a red-eye from Detroit, but skip the expensive airfare and long security line. For the first time, the Detroit Zoo’s National Amphibian Conservation Center has red-eyed tree frog tadpoles on exhibit, providing a look at the species in various stages of metamorphosis. A clutch of approximately 25 eggs was laid on January 30 and the tadpoles will soon begin to emerge as juveniles. “The next four to six weeks will offer an excellent opportunity for visitors to see the fascinating metamorphosis of the frogs at various stages of their life cycle,” said Curator of Amphibians Marcy Sieggreen. Most of the 75 amphibian species at the National Amphibian Conservation Center are bred in carefully controlled environments, and the development of…
