The fifth annual World Zombie Day took over the streets of downtown Royal Oak on Saturday afternoon.
Grant Park was the meeting place Saturday for more than 300 zombies willing to endure the drizzling rain while roaming the streets of downtown Royal Oak for a good cause. Gleaners Community Food Bank puts the Zombie Walk together every year to collect donations of funds and nonperishable foods. In 2011, zombies donated 2,551 pounds of food and more than $5,400, according to the Zombie Walk Detroit website. The Walk Against Hunger is a part of World Zombie Day. Students from the Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School in Sterling Heights try to make Royal Oak a better place today - and it's working.
Juan Garza, of Shelby, and Kayla Smith, of St. Clair Shores, say they are trying to make the world a better place by offering free hugs in downtown Royal Oak today. Garza and Smith, along with a couple dozen students from the Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School in Sterling Heights could be found up and down Main Street with arms wide open. It's all part of Paul Mitchell school's 4th Annual Free Hugs Day, which is taking place across the country. "I lost count of how many hugs I given," said Garza. Laura Eagin and Ali Jafargholi both recently moved to Royal Oak from California. "I've gotten about 20 hugs today," Eagin said.
