The sold-out 10th annual Champagne Cruise fundraiser for Detroit area charity Forgotten Harvest was held Friday evening at Westborn Market in Berkley. Classic cars cruised past along Woodward Avenue on the eve of the Dream Cruise as Champagne Cruise attendees gathered under a tent in Westborn's parking lot to eat, drink, talk and dance. Motown-style band Modern Tribe performed and silent and live auctions were held while local restaurants including Crispelli's, Slow's Bar BQ and What Crepe? provided the evening's food. Susan Goodell, president and CEO of Forgotten Harvest, thanked Westborn Market for its years of cooperation with the charity and presented an award to Westborn president Mark Anusbigian. Goodell said huge amounts of usable …

The event will generate approximately $56 million for businesses in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties – as well as international exposure for the area – but some merchants along the route say their sales take a dive during the event.
The Woodward Dream Cruise brings big bucks and international exposure to communities along the historic avenue each August, but business owners say the event is a blessing and a curse. The cruise benefits the region as a whole – with hotels and restaurants throughout Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties coming out as winners – but results in soft sales and shuttered doors for many merchants along the 16-mile parade route that stretches from Ferndale to Pontiac. Michael O'Callaghan, executive vice president and COO of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau, said Friday that the Dream Cruise – which is expected to attract 1.5 million people – brings in approximately $56 million for businesses in the three-county area. "The real true …

The Woodward Dream Cruise is expected to attract 1.5 million people to a 16-mile stretch of the historic avenue this Saturday – with the build-up stretching out for days, weeks and months in advance – creating a nightmare of gridlock and noise that has inspired some residents and businesses along the route to voice their disdain on Facebook. Many of those who take issue with the classic car parade on social media say they soured on the event once it began to affect their qualilty of life beyond just the day of the cruise. The Cruisers Go Home page created by Pleasant Ridge resident Jeanne Ruzzin, for example, had nearly 200 likes Tuesday and lively conversation. Ruzzin said it's not the Dream Cruise that she and her neighbors along the …

Participants in the annual Woodward Dream Cruise slogan contest at The Magic Bag in Ferndale have until noon Wednesday to submit their best snarky saying about the classic car parade for a chance to see their words on the venue's marquee and win a ticket prize pack. The contest is intended to give residents and business owners along the route a way to voice their frustrations with the Saturday event that is expected to attract 1.5 million visitors to a 16-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue including Ferndale, Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Berkley, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. Magic Bag owner Jeremy Haberman said that, over the years, the venue has tried a variety of ways to capitalize on the event – including booking Bo Diddley; renting …

Other topics on Monday's meeting agenda include a police vacancy and whether to allow BlackFinn to open at 7 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day.
At its 7:30 p.m. regular meeting at City Hall on Monday, Royal Oak City Commission will consider a variety of matters. Representatives of the Water Works Theatre Company (WWTC) will appear before the Royal Oak City Commission with a special request for financial support in 2012. Struggling with declining attendance due to the economy and a heat wave in 2011, WWTC is asking commissioners to consider a variety of resolutions, including: Bastone is asking city commissioners for permission to add space on the ground floor and on the second floor of the brewery, while BlackFinn Restaurant & Saloon is asking commissioners to allow the bar to open at 7 a.m. on St. Patrick's Day. BlackFinn normally opens at 11 a.m. Commissioners will consider …

Gerry Boylan and Shannon Crepeau sit down with the mayor to have a conversation about the city the leader affectionately calls 'the jewel of southeastern Michigan.'
In the second of this two-part series, columnists Gerry Boylan and Shannon Crepeau talk to Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison about his views on downtown, special events, our neighborhoods, roads, attracting new businesses and what keeps him motivated and upbeat about our city. Jim, there’s been a lot of discussion and debate about Royal Oak’s downtown regarding the night life, liquor licenses, etc. What’s your view on the downtown, or as us old-timers call it, uptown. I think we are blessed to have a vibrant and diverse downtown. Yes, there are always going to be issues when you have popular nightspots that serve alcohol. But those issues are only a small part of the overall benefits that the downtown has to offer. Downtown Royal Oak is very …
