Ex-Principal Takes Plea Deal in Embezzlement Case

Michael Greening, a Royal Oak resident, pleads guilty to one count of embezzlement in Oakland County Circuit Court.

The former Royal Oak High School principal who was charged with with taking funds from Royal Oak's student activities account has accepted a plea bargain. Michael Greening, 46, of Royal Oak, pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement of more than $1,000 but less than $20,000 as part of a negotiated plea deal he struck in Oakland County Circuit Court today. As part of the plea bargain, a second embezzlement count was dismissed, as were two alternative counts. Judge Shalina Kumar ordered a sentencing hearing to be held on Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. When asked if he had come into possession of money belonging to student accounts and used it for his personal use, Greening, under oath, answered, “Yes.” Greening resigned from all employment with the …

I was one of those who suggested we withhold judgement and let the process run it's course. Not that I was defending him. But out of respect for his kids, I was willing to withhold judgement and give him the benefit of the doubt. Though, admittedly, there was little doubt. Court Hearing for Michael Greening Postponed

The Royal Oak resident resigned as principal of Royal Oak High School while facing felony embezzlement charges.

Michael Greening, whose resignation as principal of Royal Oak High School was announced Wednesday in the face of felony embezzlement charges, will not be in court Friday as planned. Greening's preliminary exam conference in 44th District Court in Royal Oak has been adjourned to June 22 because his attorney, Paul Stablein, is working on a trial in federal court, Stablein told Royal Oak Patch on Thursday. Greening had been on paid administrative leave since mid-December "due to the possibility of financial irregularities in student activities funds."  The longtime Royal Oak resident, teacher and administrator was arraigned April 20 on two counts of felony embezzlement. Royal Oak High School Principal Back in Court Friday

Michael Greening, who faces two felony embezzlement charges, is scheduled for a preliminary exam conference in the morning.

Royal Oak High School Principal Michael Greening, charged last week with two counts of felony embezzlement, is due back in court Friday morning for a preliminary examination conference. Greening, who has been on paid administrative leave since Dec. 16, is alleged to have taken between $2,000 and up to $40,000 from the school's student activities funds. The penalty, if convicted, is up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000 or three times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater. Since the high school's roughly 1,500 students and families learned of the allegations against Greening, the school district administration and Royal Oak Police investigators have provided little information or comment during the investigation.
