Let's Dance! Royal Oak Commissioners OK Permit at Fifth Avenue Bar

Despite police department opposition and with the support of several residents at Monday's meeting, the City Commission approves the popular downtown night spot's plans, 5-2.

On Monday, Royal Oak city commissioners proved they don’t mind staying up late – or dancing. In a meeting that adjourned at 11:34 p.m., commissioners tackled many issues but none drew more public comment than whether Fifth Avenue bar should be granted a dance permit. The popular downtown nightclub asked the city to allow it to add a 10-feet by 10-feet dance floor on its first floor and another 10-feet by 14-feet dance space on the second floor. In a report to city officials, the Royal Oak Police Department urged commissioners to deny the request. “To be clear, this recommendation (to not allow a dance floor) is based on our critically low police resources, not the operator's ability to properly manage this establishment,” Lt. I don't understand why dancing in a night club to some music is so controversial ?... If someone is going to get drunk and become a problem I think they're going to do that with or without a dance floor and music... Am I wrong here ? And what did 5th Avenue do that was so wrong as to earn this "bad offender" reputation ?   more ›

Police Blotter: Book Store Robbed; Items Stolen From Homes, Cars

Royal Oak Police responded to multiple home invasions, thefts from autos and other incidents during the week of Dec. 16-22. Here are the highlights: Royal Oak officers responded Dec. 18 to the report of a possible home invasion in the 200 block of LaPlaza in which several people were fighting. Investigation revealed that earlier in the day the complainant had been in an altercation with his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend. The new boyfriend had gone to the complainant’s home with two friends and knocked on the door. When the complainant’s brother answered the door, the three men pushed their way into the residence and assaulted the complainant and his brother. The three suspects left the scene before police arrived.
