Ex-Red Wing Konstantinov to Exhibit Artwork at Royal Oak Gallery

Gallery U will host a display of the work of Konstantinov, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a crash 14 years ago.

For former Red Wing Vladimir Konstantinov, life since his 1997 accident has been quiet. After suffering a traumatic brain injury, the Russian ice legend has spent  years coping with the changes that his new life brings — and finding a new passion within the realm of artistry. It was 14 years ago, just six days after the Red Wings clenched a Stanley Cup victory, a limousine hired to drive home Konstaninov, Viacheslav Fetisov and a team masseur Sergei Mnatsakanov lost control in Birmingham and hit a tree on the Woodward Avenue median. This Thursday, for the first time ever, the public will get a rare glimpse into Konstantinov over the years, and the artist that he has become. VIDEO: Paper Dresses on Live Models at Galley U

Paper or plastic? A fashion designer who specializes in dresses made from recycled magazines and grocery store bags teams up with a downtown Royal Oak gallery for Paper Doll exhibit.

Artist Matthew Richmond, 32, of the Aveda Institute of Royal Oak brought his collection of unconventional paper and plastic dresses to Gallery U on Thursday night for a Paper Doll Exhibit. “It basically all started about six years ago,” Richmond said. “I was kind of bored one day sitting around in my apartment and I made a dress out of old wrapping paper that I had sitting around. I just kind of put it together.”   The rest, as they say, is history. Richmond started making dresses out of recycled materials such as newspapers, magazines, bottle labels and grocery bags.
