Many families are in need throughout the year, but the need spikes over the holidays as children – often fed at school through federal programs – spend more time at home. That’s why more than 40 Ameriprise financial advisors from Royal Oak joined forces with Gleaners Food Bank to volunteer to pack boxes of food this month. “Ameriprise Financial is dedicated to supporting organizations like Gleaners that are committed to hunger relief efforts,” said Elizabeth Foley, who organized the volunteer effort. “As the recession made clear by leaving one in six Americans struggling with food scarcity, hunger knows no boundaries.” There are a variety of ways to donate to Gleaners: by donating money, time or food or by hosting a food drive. Food can be…

We want to give more to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season. Shop our virtual food drive by Nov. 25 to join the fight.
The season of giving isn't over yet—so why should our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive end so soon? As such, we've extended our drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank until Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, a day when every American family gives thanks for the things in their life, most of us will enjoy a feast with our families. But there are still many people who don't have enough to eat—including one out of every four children. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and we want to help them with their goal by raising $10,000 through the Patch Fights Hunger online food drive. Ninety-four cents of every dollar you donate goes directly toward feeding hungry people in your own communities. …

More than 300,000 children in southeast Michigan don't get enough to eat, negatively impacting health, learning and more.
In our land of plenty, hunger continues to be problem. One in four Michigan children lives in poverty, and that puts them at risk of not getting enough food. Nearly half the people Gleaners Community Food Bank helps—at least 40 percent— are children younger than 18. Sadly, that need is far from being filled. Gleaners actively works to eradicate hunger, targeting a five-county area— Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne—in southeast Michigan. It provides 45 million pounds of food each year to Michigan’s hungry via its 600 partner food pantries, schools, soup kitchens, shelters and nonprofits. “Last year more than 317,000 children in southeast Michigan qualified for free or reduced fee lunches -- about 3,000 more than the year before…

The statistics are grim, especially for children. One out of four Michigan children lives in a household with food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from. In southeast Michigan, nearly 40 percent of more than 100,000 people receiving food assistance each week are children under age 18. Poor nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, has profound implications on a child’s physical and mental health, development, academic achievement and economic productivity. Today Patch.com, through its 30 Michigan sites, is launching an online food drive to raise $10,000 by Nov. 17 to feed area families. This is the first virtual food drive for the Gleaners Community Food Bank, and Patch is proud …
