Snyder will deliver his third State of the State address at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Gov. Snyder will deliver his third State of the State address to a joint session of the Michigan Legislature at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. According to the Detroit Free Press, one of the main topics of the speech will focus on matching job vacancies in Michigan with workers who possess the necessary skills to fill those jobs. Snyder notes that the state has thousands of vacant jobs, but a high unemployment level. The event will be broadcast live online at www.livestream.com/snyderlive. It will also be broadcast on Fox, and WWJ 950 AM.

The district courts in Berkley and Royal Oak will merge beginning in 2015 as part of a money-saving plan to reduce the number of judges statewide. Gov. Rick Snyder signed off on Senate bill 1351 – sponsored by Sens. John Pappageorge, R–Troy, and Vincent Gregory, D-Southfield – on Jan. 8. The legislation reverses a previous plan approved in February 2012 that consolidated 45A District Court in Berkley and 45B District Court in Oak Park into a single 45th District Court. The combined court continued to operate in two buildings. The new merger time line is as follows.

Could the sudden passage of the highly controversial right-to-work legislation lead to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's name appearing on a statewide ballot for something other than his re-election campaign? One political expert thinks it's possible. Rick Snyder has asked for a statewide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Friday, and Patches in Michigan and across the country will join in a Web Moment of Silence to mark the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Snyder said the moment of silence was requested by Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy, who issued a proclamation calling on the citizens of Connecticut to observe December 21, 2012, as a day of mourning. The pro-gun rights group issues statement about preventing future tragedies after shooting that killed 28, including the gunman, in Connecticut.
After days of silence, the National Rifle Association released a statement Tuesday on the tragic shooting in Newtown, saying it will make "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again." In the release, the organization begins to explain its silence, saying: "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting." Michigan Senate joins the House in voting to lift the safety requirement for riders older than 21.
Michigan will become the 31st state to give motorcyclists the option of wearing a helmet since Gov. Rick Snyder signed the legislation, his office announced today. Motorcyclists who are 21 or older can ride without a helmet if they have at least an additional $20,000 in medical insurance and passed a motorcycle safety course or had their motorcycle endorsement for at least two years. Opponents of state mandates feel use should be a personal choice. They say helmets can limit peripheral vision, muffle traffic awareness sounds and create additional injury risk because of their weight. County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said he expects the Ingham Circuit Court ruling to be overturned by the state Supreme Court.
The fight over Oakland County redistricting continued Wednesday, as an Ingham Circuit Court judge ruled that a state law which would have allowed Republicans to redraw district lines and reduce the number of county commissioners is unconstitutional. Judge William Collette ruled the law unconstitutional because it would impose an unfunded mandate for taxpayers who would have to bear the cost of redoing the redistricting, The Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday. It also wouldn't provide enough time for review of a new map before candidates had to file by May 15 to run for office. The bill, which was signed by Gov. I consider myself Republican, but this guy and his back door anti union stance has to go after 1 term.
