Couldn't Get a Ticket to Graduation? Watch It Online!

Relive the celebration. You can watch Royal Oak High School's commencement ceremonies online.

Thanks to the magic of technology, you can watch Royal Oak High School's graduation and commencement exercises online. Thursday night, for the first time, video was streamed live during the graduation ceremony so the entire Royal Oak community could watch it. "We are very grateful for Michael Conrad and Chris Delaney and their diligent efforts to set up live streaming of the event," said Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin. >>Click here to watch the Class of 2012 graduate. Note: The video of the ceremony begins about 12 minutes into the program. The first portion is the audio of the band playing before the processional.

Photo Gallery: 384 Names Called During Royal Oak High School Graduation

After a change in plans for an outdoor ceremony, the Class of 2012 celebrated with family and friends inside the school Thursday evening.

With a graduating class of 384 students, Royal Oak High School seniors and their families and friends filled the gymnasium at school on Thursday night for the class of 2012's graduation ceremonies. The ceremony marked the return of the commencement to the high school. The last Royal Oak commencement on school grounds was in June 2006. Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights was used for five years; Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac was used last year.   "I like having the graduation here in the school," parent Deanna Zapico said. "It's familiar. It's where the kids' memories are." Most attendees would have preferred the commencement exercises to take place on the athletic field as planned, but Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin made the call to move…

Tonight's Royal Oak High School Graduation Ceremony Moved to Gymnasium

Weather maps showing "too much green," indicating showers are headed our way, according to Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin.

After much agonizing, Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin has made a decision to move Royal Oak High School's commencement ceremonies from the football stadium indoors to the school's gymnasium. "I have been looking at weather maps all morning and there is just too much green," Lewis-Lakin said. Green is the color radar maps use to indicate light to moderate rainfall. The National Weather Service forecast for this evening says the chance of precipitation is 100 percent with rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Each graduating senior received 12 tickets for commencement guests. Since the ceremony has to be moved inside the 1,600-person capacity gym, only four tickets per student (the blue ones) will honored. …

Commencement Ceremonies Return to Royal Oak

The Class of 2012 will receive their diplomas tonight on school grounds. The last time that happened in Royal Oak was in 2006.

After several years at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights and last year at Ultimate Soccer in Pontiac, commencement ceremonies return to Royal Oak this evening at 7 p.m. sharp in the football stadium, weather permitting.  In June 2006, commencements were held at Dondero High School and Kimball High School. It was a tradition at both schools, as well as for the original Royal Oak High School, that commencement ceremonies were held on-site at the schools, according to Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin. Following consolidation in the fall of 2006, out of sensitivity to students who may have started ninth grade at Dondero and would be graduating from the former Kimball site, a decision was made to move graduation to an off site location, Lewis-…

My older daughter's graduation ceremony was held at Freedom Hill in 2010, and I was very impressed with the venue and how nice everything was. I know that Freedom Hill is now open and operating again, and I hope they consider using it for the graduation ceremony next year.   more ›

Diplomas, Dining, Discounts: Restaurants Offer Savings to ROHS Grads

Graduates and their families are invited to celebrate and save with discounts at 11 Royal Oak restaurants.

Looking for a place to take your 2012 Royal Oak High School grad to dinner to celebrate his or her well-deserved diploma? Royal Oak restaurants want to help you celebrate and save money, too. "The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce has worked with with us to make commencement in Royal Oak a special event," said Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin. "They invited Royal Oak restaurants to help celebrate our graduates by offering graduates and their families special discounts." From May 31 to June 3, grads can show their commencement program, along with school identification, at participating restaurants and receive at least a 12 percent discount on meals for the entire family (excluding alcohol, tax and tip). Some restaurants are offering further …

Graduation Parking: A Word from Royal Oak's Parking Guru

After organizing volunteers for Arts, Beats & Eats for two years, Jay Dunstan knows a thing or two about parking.

Before you head out the door to attend Royal Oak High School's commencement ceremony Thursday, here is what you need to know about parking from Jay Dunstan — the man coordinating the parking effort for the school district. Staffing the parking lots is done entirely with volunteers. "We could use maybe five or six more to help with the parking in the big field on the southeast corner of Normandy and Crooks," Dunstan said. "We're going to need people from about 5:15 p.m. until the beginning of commencement at 7 p.m. If you or someone you know can lend a hand, email Dunstan at info@volunteerroyaloak.org. "My advice would be to arrive early and enjoy what is forecast to be a very pleasant evening," Dunstan said. "Please be patient with the …

I just wanted to thank Jay for taking on this task, especially trying to find volunteers. If I did not have a graduating senior this year, I would have volunteered to help you out. However, feel free to call me next year if graduation is still at ROHS.   more ›

Royal Oak High School Graduation: What You Need to Know

Here are details the 384 graduating seniors probably forgot to tell their parents and loved ones about Thursday's ceremony, parking, dress code, All Night Party and more.

The roughly 384 graduating Royal Oak High School seniors are ready to go, but it's likely their parents and guests aren't totally sure about all the details for Thursday's commencement exercises. So here is your 2012 graduation guide: When and Where Commencement takes place at 7 p.m. sharp Thursday at the Royal Oak High School football stadium, so seniors are being told to be at school by 6 p.m. After several years at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights and last year at Ultimate Soccer in Pontiac, "This is what parents and students told us they want," school representatives said in a letter sent to seniors' parents. There will be plenty of room for everyone at the football field, school officials promise. Royal Oak High School stadium Royal …

I was really reluctant about Ultimate Soccer last year but it really ended up a great venue. Plenty of parking and plenty of seating with a pretty good view of the graduates receiving their diplomas. I will vote for that again next year.   more ›
