City Approves Second Sidewalk Cafe for Hamlin Corner

Royal Oak bar set to open on May 23.

The Royal Oak City Commission had no objections to Hamlin Corner adding an additional sidewalk café seating area and an elevated disc jockey stand when it met Monday night. By Wednesday, the 6,700-square-foot restaurant/bar, which is set to open on May 23, had completed the outdoor seating area surrounded by concrete planter boxes. I prefer the trees and the planters on the sidewalk to bicycles. Can you believe there are people out there that think they should be able to ride their bicycle on the downtown sidewalk?   more ›

Hamlin Corner Asks Commission to Approve Last-Minute Changes Before May 23 Opening

Royal Oak Police do not object to requests for a second sidewalk cafe and DJ stand.

With its grand opening just a couple of weeks away, Hamlin Corner is seeking the approval of the Royal Oak City Commission to tweak its plan of operation. The 6,700-square-foot restaurant/bar, which is set to open on May 23, is asking to add a second sidewalk café seating area with seven tables and 16 seats on Main Street and to place an elevated disc jockey stand next to its dance floor. A 20-seat outdoor patio, also on Main Street, was previously approved. The Royal Oak Police Department has no objections to Hamlin Corner’s request. “Our experience with restaurant sidewalk cafes has been positive and the police department expends minimal resources on their supervision,” wrote Deputy Chief Gordon Young in a memo to commissioners. …

The metal railings provided uniformity and did not make it look like an extension of the restaurant far into the sidewalk. Disappointing to see the concrete - looks more like a consturction zone to avoid.   more ›

Bill, this is a truly shocking discovery! This could be the greatest scandal since the discovery of insider trading on Wall Street by Martha Stewart. It will be interesting as the birds return and those sitting under that sign notice toppings on their pizza they did not order.   more ›
