Share Your Elf on the Shelf Hiding Spots: What Has that Elf Been Up To?

Our Patch Elf on the Shelf has gotten ahold of our computer and now wants to know what his buddy elves are up to. Share your photos here!

Hi friends! I'm the Patch Elf on the Shelf. Call me Patchy. I've heard about more of my friends hanging around the area lately, and I wondered what they were up to. Could their families post pictures here on Patch to show me? I'd love to catch up with them. We all go back to Santa on Christmas Eve, but in the meantime, we'll be watching you! Cheers, Patchy the Elf

How Will You Give This Christmas?

Leave a comment below to let us know what charity you plan to help this holiday season.

Christmas is the season of giving, and Patch wants to know what charity or group you are giving to this year. The American Red Cross released a poll in November in which most Americans said that they will continue to donate to charity this holiday season. In fact, most people said that their giving to political causes and Hurricane Sandy relief efforts will not reduce their year-end gifts to charity. The Red Cross poll also said that friends play a large role in charitable giving. Half of all donors (51 percent) said they would donate if a friend talked to them personally about a charity. So now Patch is asking you: What charities do you plan to help this Christmas? Will you donate to the Salvation Army or Toys for Tots? Will you volunteer…

My favorite for the last 35 years has been the Old Newsboys Goodfellow Fund of Detroit, a 98-year old 501(C)(3) charity that this year hopes to raise $1.2 million to provide 32,000 Christmas packages stuffed with warm clothing, hats, gloves, toys, dolls, books, candy and a host of other gifts for kids aged 5-13 in Detroit, Harper Woods, Highland Park and River Rouge. Homemade Holiday Gift Ideas to Take Money, Stress Out of Christmas

As you look over the list of gifts you need this holiday season, an unsettling feeling starts. How will I pay for all these gifts? How about homemade gifts?

Gift-giving is meant to be a time for sharing how much you appreciate others, but rising prices and tight budgets take the feel-good vibes right out of gift-giving traditions. This year, take the money stress out of the holidays by turning to homemade gifts. Homemade gifts are a great way to show you appreciate someone while also adding a personal touch. Gifts don’t need to be expensive to be special. Get the family involved in the fun and you will be creating memories while making unique gifts for those who mean the most in your life. Royal Oak Patch explores the homemade holidays in hopes that you will find something to inspire you to enjoy the season more. Healthy options: Pack energy in a jar with healthy snacks like energy bars, dark …

It's Time to Sparkle in Royal Oak

The annual downtown holiday tree lighting doesn't kick off until Thursday, but many Royal Oak businesses are already glowing.

This year's tree lighting ceremony at the Royal Oak Farmers Market, set for 6:15 p.m. Thursday, will be an extravaganza. Not only will visitors hear carolers, enjoy a special performance by the Salvation Army Band and the Royal Oak Children's Choir  – topped off with an appearance by the Jolly Old Elf himself – they can also buy unique holiday presents at the Holiday Magic Marketplace from 4-8 p.m.  In the meantime, you don't have to wait for Santa Claus to pull the switch to brighten your night. A walk around downtown reveals several restaurants and shops are sporting a holiday glow. Did we miss your favorite holiday light display? Upload a photo!

Do Royal Oak's Holiday Lights Leave You in Awe?

Royal Oak Patch readers are positively glowing about this year's downtown holiday lights.

If Royal Oak Patch’s Facebook is any indication, residents seem to be turned on by this year’s downtown holiday light display. In the past, Royal Oak's holiday light display left some residents and city leaders seeing red — and not in a good way. “It has just been one disappointment after another,” said Bill Harrison, of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), at a city commission meeting last November. Royal Oak’s lackluster history included tree trunks not wrapped correctly, canopies of lights not of the correct density and too many strands that did not work.  This year residents seem to think the DDA, which installs the lights, got it right. Here’s what people are saying about photos of the downtown holiday lights on Facebook:

How to Track Down the Hottest Toys

Tips for getting the presents they want without having to hoof it from Royal Oak to the North Pole.

Santa’s awesome, but he doesn’t always deliver the hottest toys of the season on demand to Royal Oak, no matter how nicely we ask. If the kids – or wannabe kids – in your life happen to have their hearts set on presents that are hard to come by, it can be torturous running from store to store only to find what they really want just isn’t available. Whether your little girl has her sights on the latest Lalaloopsy, your son wants a Hot Wheels R/C Terrain Twister or that “big baby” in your life is yearning for a copy of Halo 4, here are some ideas on how to track down what’s in demand without putting miles and miles on your vehicle in the process: Tips for Shopping in Town If you hate ordering online and love the gratification of being able …

The Royal Oak Barnes & Noble chooses Beaumont Children’s Hospital as the local non-profit recipient of its Annual Holiday Book Drive.
