Beautiful Sunday afternoon brings out thousands to pack route for Royal Oak's traditional pre-Thanksgiving events.
"Is there any better city than Royal Oak?" shouted Grand Marshal Jay Towers, anchor of Fox 2 News Weekend and morning host on Fresh 100.3. "And, is there any better place to have a parade?" Towers, along with Mayor Jim Ellison and members of the Royal Oak City Commission, welcomed Santa and Mrs. Claus to downtown Royal Oak on Sunday afternoon as the crowd cheered. The couple arrived by float in the Holiday Magic Parade, which brings over 20,000 people to downtown each year to kick off the holiday season. "Who do we thank for this beautiful weather?" Downtown Royal Oak invites families to the 11th Annual Holiday Magic Parade presented by Star Lanes Restaurant & Sports Bar at Emagine Royal Oak on Sunday, Nov. 18at 2 p.m. The parade starts at Lincoln and Washington and heads north on Washington to Fourth Street where it heads west and ends at Lafayette. This Downtown Royal Oak parade will once again kick off the holiday season by showcasing over 80 parade units including marching bands, floats from the Parade Company, circus performers, dance troupes and more! Downtown Royal Oak is holding a contest for one lucky kid to be the Assistant Marshall of the 11th Annual Holiday Magic Parade presented by Star Lanes Restaurant & Sports Bar at Emagine Royal Oak on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. Jay Towers, Anchor of Fox 2 News Weekend and Morning Host on Fresh 100.3, will lead the 2012 parade as the Grand Marshall and is looking for an assistant to ride in the parade with him. Parade watchers lined downtown Royal Oak streets with some pretty amazing hats and gloves. Even Mrs. Claus wore her best bonnet.
The 10th Annual Holiday Magic Parade kicked off the holiday season in downtown Royal Oak today. The grand finale included Mayor Jim Ellison awarding Santa the hearts of all the folks in the city. “We’ve already given you the keys to the city, Santa. We want you to know you have our hearts!” the mayor said. Santa and Mrs. Claus weren’t the only ones with festive hats. Thousands of parade watchers lined the streets with hot cocoa, blankets and some pretty crazy hats and gloves to keep them warm. Mrs. Claus was adorned with a fabulous hat and all the trimmings. Royal Oak officials tackle a long agenda in four-hour meeting Monday evening.
It took four hours, but the Royal Oak City Commission got through a long agenda Monday night. Aside from the controversial “party bus” ordinance issue, following are some highlights from the meeting: By a 5-2 vote, the City Commission approved the purchase of two 2012 Ford Tauruses at a cost of $21,658 each for Royal Oak Police detectives’ use, replacing two other vehicles that are 10 years or older. Commissioners Jim Rasor and Patricia Capello voted against the expenditure. City Manager Don Johnson reviewed the preliminary financial report for the Labor Day weekend Arts, Beats & Eats festival.
