Royal Oak Students Start Summer with Trip to Joplin for Tornado Relief

On Sunday, ROHS InterAct Club heads to Missouri for a five-day trip to help Joplin residents piece together their lives after a May 22 tornado wiped out their homes.

Early Sunday morning, 35 students will depart Royal Oak High School to assist in the relief efforts of one the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history. The group is headed to Joplin, MO, where more than 150 people lost their lives and the area remains a disaster zone. InterAct is a youth Rotary club that engages students with local and national causes. The relief trip is being coordinated by Steve Chisnell, a ROHS English teacher and InterAct Club advisor.   Chisnell said National Relief Network Executive Director Scott Harding originally contacted him April 28, the evening after deadly tornados tore through the south. Students' Box City Raises Awareness of Homeless

Royal Oak High School's InterAct Club raises money for the homeless by camping out overnight in shelters made of boxes and scraps.

Royal Oak High School's InterAct Club brought together dozens of students to live in cardboard boxes on the front lawn of Royal Oak Middle School on Friday night. Students raised pledges and accepted donations from passers-by to divide between S.O.S. (South Oakland Shelter) and victims of the Japan earthquake and tsunami.  "The purpose of this fundraiser is to raise awareness while having fun and hopefully raising a lot of money for a good cause,"said junior Kate Kelley, president of InterAct. Kelley said the club raised nearly $1,500 last year.

InterAct's President Kate Kelly is a brilliant spokesperson. I would hire her as a publicist, or vote for her (if she ever runs for office) in a heartbeat.   more ›

Whiz Kids: ROHS Students Use Mid-Winter Break to Help Rebuild New Orleans

Teens, teachers and others volunteer their time to replant Louisiana wetlands damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Thirty-eight Royal Oak High School students returned Friday from New Orleans after working to replant Louisiana wetlands as part of an environmental restoration project. The students in grades 9-12 were accompanied by 11 adult chaperones on the trip, during which they planted 6,500 cypress saplings in three days, starting on Valentine’s Day. The effort was a part of the Interact Club, led by Royal Oak High School teacher and club advisor Steve Chisnell. Chisnell said it was grueling work as the group waded through heavy mud and thick brush “to complete the work, rebuilding the natural barrier against future floods in the region, restoring vital habitats for wildlife.” The group spent Thursday meeting with Robert Green, a Lower Ninth Ward …

A tremendous high 5 to these students and chaperones who gave up themselves to help rebuild an historic and culturally rich American city. I'm sure you heard some great stories of Katrina and the levee failures that will enrich your lives. You truly are some of the heroes.
