Embattled Royal Oak High School Principal Michael Greening Resigns

Longtime teacher and administrator faces felony embezzlement charges.

Michael Greening, the principal of Royal Oak High School facing felony embezzlement charges stemming from "the possibility of financial irregularities in student activities funds," has resigned. According to a statement from the school district: The School District of the City of Royal Oak has received and accepted a letter of resignation from Michael Greening, Royal Oak High School Principal.     The resignation is from all employment with the school district and is effective June 30, 2012. Shawn Lewis-Lakin, Superintendent of Schools, stated: "The letters Mr. Greening and I have exchanged were simple one sentence letters in which he resigned and I accepted his resignation on behalf of the district." Ford Donates $14,500 to Royal Oak High School

Royal Oak High School's Drive One 4 UR School video wins $10,000 in a national contest; test drives earn another $4,500.

Ford Motor Co. made a hefty deposit of $14,500 into Royal Oak High School’s bank account today thanks to a successful community effort, and a group of talented student filmmakers. Teacher Michael Conrad's video production students learned on May 25 that they had edged out West Jessamine High School (KY), Caddo Mills High School (TX), and Kewanee High School (IL) to earn top honors in a Drive One 4 UR School video contest that began with 64 entries from across the country. Program HQ (which ran the online contest) and Ford selected Royal Oak based on the overall message strength of their submission. Royal Oak Passes Emergency Ordinance Banning K2/Spice

Commissioners want synthetic marijuana off the shelves in the city's gas stations and convenience stores immediately.

Royal Oak city commissioners unanimously approved an emergency ordinance Monday night prohibiting businesses in the city from selling synthetic drugs such as K2 and Spice. The ordinance will become effective upon publication, either Wednesday or Thursday of this week, according to City Attorney Dave Gillam. Following the lead of Macomb County, which implemented an emergency order to ban the sale of synthetic marijuana earlier Monday, Commissioner David Poulton called on his fellow commissioners to act immediately to prohibit the possession and use of, and trafficking in, synthetic drugs in Royal Oak.  "We’ve seen high profile crimes," Poulton said. PHOTOS: The Oak Apple Run, From Start to Finish

"This is great weather for runners." Gathered at the start/finish line of the Oak Apple Run event Saturday morning in downtown Royal Oak, this was a common refrain. "When I left home it was 50 degrees," said Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin, who decided to run in the 10K race at the last minute. The cool weather was a factor in his decision. The morning began with light drizzle and ended with temps in the low 60s and partly sunny skies. Nearly 1,600 runners and walkers participated in the 35th Annual Oak Apple Run, including three runnners from Arizona; three from California; one from Maryland; three from Ohio; six from Ontario; four from Pennsylvania and one from Virginia.  "I've overheard a lot of people say they attend a lot of races …
