Gov. Snyder Expected to Sign Into Law K2, Spice Ban on Tuesday

The ban on the synthetic drugs would go into effect on July 1.

Critics of the synthetic drug known as K2 or Spice have been calling for a statewide ban on the substance, which can have powerful side effects. On Tuesday, Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to sign into law a ban on the drug, state Rep. Kurt Heise (R-Plymouth) told Northville's city council Monday night. The substance has been sold legally because it is marketed as herbal incense or potpourri and is labeled "not for human consumption." The Detroit Free Press reports: "One of the bills updates the list of chemicals used to make synthetic drugs and would make them illegal to possess and sell. The ban would go into effect July 1." Other legislation would go into effect immediately and authorize the state to temporarily ban a substance if …

K2/Spice Update: Royal Oak Stores Say They've Stop Selling Drug

Retailers that once sold the dangerous synthetic drug say they no longer are selling it after the sale of it became illegal in the city Wednesday.

“We don’t have it anymore!” That was the response from the five Royal Oak vendors that were reported as still selling synthetic marijuana known as K2 or Spice at the end of May. “We decided to stop selling it because we heard it was hurting a lot of kids,” said Wally Polis, the owner of the BP gas station at 4727 Coolidge. “We didn’t want to sell something that was sending kids to the emergency room.” Many of those casualties related to the synthetic drugs have been well-publicized, such as the probable fatal overdose of an 18-year-old in Bloomfield Township, and its link to the fatal attack on the Cipriano family in Farmington Hills. “At first we thought it was just another form of tobacco,” Polis said as to why he was selling the then-…

Royal Oak Passes Emergency Ordinance Banning K2/Spice

Commissioners want synthetic marijuana off the shelves in the city's gas stations and convenience stores immediately.

Royal Oak city commissioners unanimously approved an emergency ordinance Monday night prohibiting businesses in the city from selling synthetic drugs such as K2 and Spice. The ordinance will become effective upon publication, either Wednesday or Thursday of this week, according to City Attorney Dave Gillam. Following the lead of Macomb County, which implemented an emergency order to ban the sale of synthetic marijuana earlier Monday, Commissioner David Poulton called on his fellow commissioners to act immediately to prohibit the possession and use of, and trafficking in, synthetic drugs in Royal Oak.  "We’ve seen high profile crimes," Poulton said. "We’ve seen terrible incidences involving our youth because of a product that is sold at gas…

Citgo Asks Gas Stations to Stop Selling K2

In a letter, a company leader asks local owners to stop selling Spice or K2—a synthetic form of marijuana—at all of its stations, effective immediately.

Citgo has asked the owners of its gas stations to stop selling K2 and Spice—a synthetic form of marijuana. The sale of K2 and Spice has caused concern for many parents and local officials in Michigan, and Alan Flagg, the general manager of light oils marketing for Citgo, joined the outcry. In a letter dated May 31, Flagg asked the local owners of Citgo stations to stop the sale of K2 at locally-owned, Citgo-branded locations, even in states where the substances are legal, including Michigan. “Substances such as synthetic marijuana and Bath Salts, sold under a variety of names, including Spice and K2, have proven to be harmful substances, especially for teenagers,” Flagg wrote in the letter. “At least 40 states have banned their sale in …

K2 Legislation Introduced in House

House Bill 5709 would require the state to analyze and report on synthetic marijuana.

Michigan state Rep. George Darany (D-Dearborn) on Wednesday introduced legislation aimed to combat the sale and use of synthetic marijuana in the state of Michigan, according to Darany's office. The legislation–House Bill 5709–would require the Michigan Department of Community Health in cooperation with the State Police to analyze the content of the herbal mixtures and create a written report of its findings. The bill concerns rampant sale and use of the synthetic drug known commonly as K2 or Spice. The drug has stirred up opposition in Michigan–especially recently, with several highly publicized cases of violence or health problems resulting in teens who used the drug. Darany said he believes there is bipartisan support for the HB 5709. "…

It’s legal, lethal and available in Royal Oak gas stations and convenience stores. K2, also known as Spice, is a synthetic substance marketed as an alternative to marijuana. It’s reportedly behind the weekend hospitalization of a 16-year-old Rochester Hills boy found uncooperative and speaking incoherently on his lawn and a 19-year-old Troy teen arrested for erratic driving early Monday morning. Most notably, Tucker Cipriano, 19, of Farmington Hills is believed to have been high on synthetic marijuana in April when he attacked his family, killing his father and severely injuring his mother and brother. Spice is a form of synthetic marijuana that is commonly sold as incense, or potpourri. It was originally sold under the name K2, but …
