Who Should Fill the Vacant Royal Oak City Commission Seat?

A candidate shares her thoughts on how the commission should fill Pat Capello's position.

The following letter was sent to Royal Oak Patch by Sharlan Douglas, a Royal Oak resident and candidate for Royal Oak City Commission: Serving with Pat Capello on the planning commission and watching her in action with the city commission, I was always impressed with her diligence and detailed understanding of the issues brought before her. Her resignation leaves a considerable vacuum. This development raises the question, "Who should replace her?" I am a candidate for city commission and I expect every candidate's first impulse is to say, "Pick me. Pick me!" But choosing anyone from the current pool of candidates would not serve the best interest of the city. Ms. Capello’s replacement needs to hit the ground running and that, to me, …

Sharlan think about what I said especially if they chose not to take your offer to fill Pat Capello's former position. That should send a clear signal that you are not welcome on the commission. The surprise is that this community would no doubt welcome you with rose petals if you chose to oppose Ellison. The worst scenario is having some dark horse (no doubt an attorney) with an ulterior agenda …   more ›

Letter to Editor: Patricia Paruch Endorses Meinecke for District Court Judge

Derek Meineck has a former mayor's wholehearted support.

The following letter was sent to Royal Oak Patch by former Royal Oak City Commissioner and Mayor Patricia Paruch: I am proud to support Derek Meinecke for Judge of Royal Oak's 44th District Court. Royal Oak has been blessed over the years to have elected judges with uncompromising integrity. I was fortunate enough to work with a number of them in my years at City Hall. Derek will be an honorable addition to that roster. Derek's passion for bringing justice and fairness to victims of crimes and their families, which he has so ably demonstrated during his years with the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, will serve the Royal Oak community very well. Derek believes that effective intervention by a district court at the initial stages of …

Letter to Editor: Former City Commissioner Urges Support for Meinecke

Ilene Lanfear believes Derek Meinecke has the integrity, experience and temperament required to serve from the bench.

The following letter was sent to Royal Oak Patch by former Royal Oak City Commissioner Ilene Lanfear: During my time as a Royal Oak City Commissioner and as an active resident in our community, I know that our court has been served well by our judges. With the retirement of Judge Sawicki after 30 years of exceptional leadership, we are faced with the decision of choosing the right person to lead our court into the future. We have the chance to elect an exceptional judge in Derek Meinecke. Experience matters in this race. One must take into account the experience of 36 Oakland County judges, the Oakland County Prosecutor and numerous community leaders who are supporting Derek's campaign. When Judge Sawicki took to the bench 30 years ago, he…

I kind of like Carlo Ginotti. He has paid his dues and deserves some respect. I found him to be personable if you can talk to him one on one. In my opinion he puts his family and church as a priority which is not a bad thing. I believe he would not disappoint us on the bench. His only problem may be his association with politicians, I disagree that this makes him one. As for Derek Meinecke who …   more ›

Letter to Editor: Vote 'Yes' to Renew Solid Waste Millage

Royal Oak residents want voters to consider a "yes" vote to renew the Royal Oak Solid Waste Millage, Charter Amendment Proposal A.

The following letter was sent to Royal Oak Patch by Dave and Kathy Guest of Royal Oak: Please consider a "yes" vote on Nov. 8 to renew the Royal Oak Solid Waste Millage, Charter Amendment Proposal A. This one mill renewal millage pops up every five years and continues "solid waste" services in Royal Oak that picks up trash, recyclables, bulk items and yard waste. This funding also covers leaf collection, storm damage clean up and street cleaning. The yard waste that is collected is taken to a facility in Rochester Hills where it is composted; hence our free compost! The storm damage clean-up/chipping offers us free wood chips! As Royal Oak residents we also have access to the SOCRRA drop off site to take our household hazardous waste, …

Letter to Editor: Praise for Royal Oak Firefighters

A Woodslee neighbor applauds the Royal Oak Fire Department on their efforts to save a home after live power wires set it ablaze.

The following letter was sent to Royal Oak Patch by Bob Wonnacott, a Royal Oak resident: The Royal Oak Fire Department, as well as the Royal Oak Police Department, deserve congratulations on how they handled the recent house fire on Woodslee on Sunday. Even though it was reported that the house was a total loss, it was not because of their lack of trying to save it. The Fire Department even went beyond what anyone would expect (coming from a former Clawson firefighter). They actually began putting water on the structure while live high-tension wires were still sparking on the house and surrounding grounds. It took Detroit Edison approximately 1-1/2 hours to respond to Royal Oak’s call for assistance. Everyone I spoke with was outraged with…
