The annual MEAP results, released Monday morning, showed academic improvement in most areas for Royal Oak students in the last year. The results show students maintaining a higher level of proficiency in every grade level and every subject than peers statewide. The 2012 Michigan Educational Assessment Program measures progress in subjects such as math, reading, writing, science and social studies for third through ninth-graders. In the data released publicly Monday, nearly 52.8 percent of Royal Oak eighth-grade students were ranked proficient in math - meaning they met or exceeded state standards - versus 37 percent in 2011. The results of the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests that were administered to students in October 2011 were released on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. In Royal Oak, across all grades in all content areas our scores continue to be significantly above state averages. This past fall, Michigan adopted new cut scores to determine proficiency levels for these tests. The new cut scores on all state tests in all grades are now higher than they were in previous years; in order to achieve proficiency, a student must now earn a higher score than in previous years. I think what is more telling is if you look at the scores from one year to the next. For example...look at 3rd grade math in 2011...the percent proficiency is 48.7. We can assume that a majority of those students stayed in RO and attended 4th grade. The Math proficiency for 2012 in 4th grade math is 52.5%. In that year, 3.8% of the student became proficient according to meap testing standards. …   more ›
