Royal Oak Legend Has a Hand in Detroit's Newest Outdoor Attraction

The Detroit Historical Society Museum's Legends Plaza, unveiled today, has a few Royal Oak connections.

An outdoor exhibition honoring two dozen celebrities with Metro Detroit roots, including Royal Oak, was unveiled today at the Detroit Historical Museum. The museum's Detroit Legends Plaza is its first outdoor attraction. The plaza features the concrete handprints of a wide range of sports and entertainment stars, including director/producer/writer Sam Raimi, who was born in Royal Oak in 1959. Raimi went on to direct the Evil Dead series and the blockbuster Spider-Man films. It can also be noted that Raimi was a student of Royal Oak High School Interim Principal Jim Moll when he was a young teacher at Groves High School in Birmingham. Martha Reeves Honored at Emagine in Royal Oak

The Motown songstress leaves her handprints and signature in cement at the Detroit Historical Society’s Detroit Legends Plaza at the theater.

Martha Reeves, one of many artists who helped to create the Motown sound, put her handprints and signature in cement for the Detroit Historical Society’s Detroit Legends Plaza at the Emagine Theatre in Royal Oak today. Reeves told reporters it was fun to stick her hands in the cement, a first for the 70-year-old songstress. "This felt great," Reeves said. "I used to make mud pies and I'd make my brother eat them. But this was more fun than mud." Reeves, whose hit songs with the Vandellas include Heat Wave and Dancing in the Streets, will be back at the Emagine tonight for a screening of the documentary Re:Generation Music Project, in which she is featured.
