Climb On Board: Bandage Removed from Zoo's Hippo Sculpture

The Detroit Zoo's beloved 'Sleeping Hippo' sculpture is ready to greet children of all ages this morning when the zoo opens at 10 a.m.

The barricades are down, the bandage is removed, and the Detroit Zoo's favorite greeter is ready this morning to meet you at the zoo. Children get ready to climb on top the hippo's back, crawl through her belly and slide down her nose. After months of being under wraps, the Sleeping Hippo has been repaired and polished. Last winter zoo officials wrapped Sleeping Hippo, the work of Russian artist Samuel Cashwan (1900-89), in plastic and placed temporary guardrails around her to keep visitors from playing on her. "She is showing her age. (She has) some cracks, but she can be saved," said Patricia Janeway in February, the zoo's communications director. "We are awaiting warmer temperatures to perform the restorative measures." Integrity …

Sagging Downtown Condo Balcony Gets Straightened Out - Sort Of

Bracing is added to level a porch that has been drooping for almost three years while arbitration continues.

A sagging third-story balcony at the busy corner of Main Street at 11 Mile Road in downtown Royal Oak got a lift this week, while architects, structural engineers and builders continue to try to straighten out things in court. New stanchions, shims and a tension wire seem to be working as a temporary fix to level a balcony at the 22-unit North Main Lofts. The balcony has been a problem since 2009. Jason Craig, Royal Oak's chief building official, said he has received multiple calls over the years on the sagging balcony, many from architects who notice it while driving through town. Last summer, a single stanchion or post was placed on the second-level balcony beneath the sagging balcony to help support it. Craig and Interim City Engineer …

You hit he nail on the head Debbie. All roads to city hall are one way. We need to attract businesses downtown but once they are here and join the DDA they do not even recognize that Royal Oak is more than Main Street and Washington. Just look at the condition of the Stardream Park area, the last time it was touched it was by the Memorial society. The unpainted benches are decaying, No additional…   more ›

Royal Oak DDA Interested in Hotel Development on Former Fresard Site

Board members generally like the concept but want more information from the new owners of the Main Street property.

Members of Royal Oak's Downtown Development Authority (DDA) showed interest in exploring the development of a hotel at the former Fresard auto dealership site on Main Street, in which the unidentified owners are looking for incentives or financial assistance. David Griffin of CBRE, a full-service real estate services company, represents the new owner of the property, a private group doing business as 400 Main LLC. Griffin, who would not reveal the names of the new owners at Wednesday's DDA meeting, said the group purchased the Fresard property a few weeks ago. “They have title to the asset,” he said. At the end of January, the "for sale" sign on the Fresard property was taken down and Michael Southen of Signature Associates, a commercial …

And in Kroger's case, the right thing was done. Unbeknownst to you, Ellison tried very hard to drag Kroger back, they had no interest. The project lost unanimously, so Ellison changing his vote would have had no effect.   more ›

City Commissioner Wants to Reignite Royal Oak Neighborhood Watches

Fox 2 anchor and reporter Ron Savage will moderate the first Royal Oak Safe Neighborhoods Community Dialogue on June 27.

“By nature, police are reactive,” Royal Oak City Commissioner Peggy Goodwin said. “They aren’t always going to be in the neighborhood every time something bad happens, so we need to learn how to help prevent crime.” To that end, Goodwin, who is the first city commissioner to sit on the Crime Prevention Council, is on a mission to re-ignite neighborhood watches. A consultant, Goodwin is spearheading first Royal Oak Safe Neighborhoods Community Dialogue on June 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Royal Oak Middle School Auditorium.  “We are trying to create a heightened understanding of how residents can interface with law enforcement to prevent crimes,” Goodwin said. Part of the program will explain what a neighborhood watch is, how it works and …

I'd like to respond to this comment, but I'm still trying to figure out what it says. You want everyone to have semi-automatic guns? The talk thier talk and walk thier walk? (by the way, those red squiggly lines under words means that you've misspelled them) If the actions of the mayor or the city commission are so egregious, they won't be re-elected. However, I suspect that because their actions…   more ›

Art Van Furniture in Royal Oak will transform a large portion of its parking structure beneath its Woodward Avenue store into a state-of-the-art Scott Shuptrine Interiors showplace that will sell everything from custom-built furniture to exclusive rugs and window treatments. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-October.
