Uncontested races and lack of hot button issues are probably to blame for low turnout on Election Day.
On Election Day, Royal Oak City Clerk Melanie Halas said she knew the final turnout would be low when she checked in with poll workers midday. As it turned out, only 15 percent of registered voters voted Tuesday. In 2009, the most recent city and school general election, 17 percent of registered voters cast ballots. Tuesday, voters re-elected Mayor Jim Ellison to a record fifth term, and Peggy Goodwin, Mike Fournier and Kyle DuBuc to City Commission. Proposal A, the solid waste millage renewal, passed easily as did three City Charter housekeeping proposals. Goodwin celebrated with her supporters at Sangria in downtown Royal Oak on Tuesday. She acknowledged that all the candidates want what is best for Royal Oak. "If we can have a civilized…

Peggy Goodwin, Mike Fournier and Kyle DuBuc win seats on City Commission.
Voters in Royal Oak on Tuesday elected three newcomers to City Commission, re-elected Mayor Jim Ellison and approved by a wide margin continued funding for curbside recycling and waste hauling. Here's a look at what happened at the polls: In the race for city commission, Peggy Goodwin, Mike Fournier, and Kyle DuBuc were the top vote-getters for the three seats left vacant by Commissioners Terry Drinkwine, Michael Andrzejak and Chuck Semchena, who each decided not to run for re-election. Goodwin, 49, the only woman in the race, received 17.89 percent of the vote. "I have a long history of working in the community," Goodwin said. "I have specific ideas on how to move forward." Goodwin, celebrated with her supporters at Sangria. She …

Precinct 9 Chair Shannon Crepeau has tips for voting in Royal Oak on Tuesday.
Tuesday, Royal Oak voters go to the polls to vote for a mayor, three city commissioners and two school board members. They will also be asked to decide on four proposals. Last November, when state voters went to the polls to elect a new governor, 49 percent of registered Royal Oak voters participated — slightly less than the Oakland County average of 52 percent, according to the City Clerk's Office. Voter turnout is expected to be low Tuesday. The last time there was a city and school general election, in 2009, only 25 percent of registered voters cast ballots. Patch columnist Shannon Crepeau, 32, has been an election inspector for Precinct 9 since 2004 and wishes everyone would get as excited about elections as she does. “We only see a …

Jim Ellison addressed a crowd of city leaders and residents at Emagine theater on Tuesday afternoon for the State of the City address.
When Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison took the podium Tuesday afternoon for his State of the City address, he made one thing clear from the beginning: Royal Oak is in a “state of transition.” While Ellison said the city remains strong, stable and is the “place to be in southeastern Michigan,” revenue is down and services aren’t at the level they used to be. With this in mind, Ellison – speaking at the Emagine Royal Oak for the event hosted by the Royal Oak Rotary Club – addressed a variety of positives and negatives that the city is working with and discussed how the city can move forward. Ellison told the crowd of city leaders, officials and residents that Royal Oak “cannot revert to the bedroom community we grew up in.” He said the city will …
