Barack Obama Re-Elected President

President Obama defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential election.

President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden were re-elected Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney and his vice-presidential running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. NBC News called the presidential election for Obama around 11:15 EST. The president sent a message on Twitter at 10:14 saying simply, "This happened because of you. Thank you." The campaign Obama won was the most expensive presidential race ever, with both parties raising about $2.6 billion. The race was filled with negative campaigning on both sides, from President Obama attacking Romney’s business experience with Bain Capital to Romney lambasting Obama’s handling of the economy. The race tightened during the final months of the campaign, with gaffes and …

Lottery ticket-holders in Kansas, Illinois and Maryland each selected the winning numbers, which were: 2-4-23-38-46, and Mega Ball 23.

Lucky lottery ticket-holders in Kansas, Illinois, and Maryland likely put an end to the fantasies of a nation after Mega Millions winners were announced Friday night. The $640 million jackpot, believed to be the world's largest such prize, is expected to be split between three winners who picked: 2-4-23-38-46, and Mega Ball 23. The Mega Millions game, played in 44 states and jurisdictions, gripped imaginations and pocketbooks alike all week after the prize grew by more than $300 million since the previous drawing on Tuesday. On Patch, Twitter, and Facebook, ideas for how to spend the loot ranged from philanthropic to frivolous: As of Saturday morning, no media outlet had reported any of the tickets as being claimed. Earlier this week, …

Lotteries are an immoral way for governments to raise money. They take advantage of people's desire to get rich quick, and are generally a regressive tax on those who can least afford it. The only good thing about them is they are a voluntary tax. The worst false advertising is done by government: it's for education. No it's not, it's for the general fund; it's all one big pot. Spending is …   more ›

UPDATE: Mega Millions Jackpot Reaches $363 Million

Are you more inclined to play with a prize like that?

Need $363 million? Who doesn't, right? Well, Tuesday could be the day. The Mega Millions lottery prize has been increased to $363 million, one of the highest jackpots ever. The next drawing will be 11 p.m. Tuesday, so you can still vie for a piece. This is the third-largest prize in the multi-state lottery's history, behind a $390-million jackpot in 2007 and $380-million jackpot in 2011, according to megamillions.com. Earlier this week, Michigan made national news because five tickets, matching five of the six Mega Millions numbers, were sold at the same Meijer store in Northville. Those prizes were $250,000 each, according the Michigan Lottery. “There are a lot of things that can sometimes seem like they’re impossible to happen. But we …

I'm not selfish. I'm willing to share. Just give me a take home of a milli and I'll surely make it do what it do babay ;-)   more ›

POLL: What Issues Do You Want Gov. Snyder to Address Tonight?

State of the State speech by Gov. Rick Snyder, airing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, will set second-year policy agenda.

Gov. Rick Snyder begins pushing his second-year priorities during a 7 p.m. State of the State address to legislators at the Capitol in Lansing, which will air on WTVS (Detroit Public TV) and WDET (101.9 FM). Advocacy groups sketch wish lists of what they'd like to hear, such as: The speech previews budget plans coming Feb. 9. With a surprise surplus of $457 million left from the last fiscal year, Snyder has room to expand initiatives and propose new ones. Tonight's address is about "setting a tone for the entire year," Snyder said this week. He's expected to "discuss public schools and universities, improving public transportation in southeast Michigan, how the state pays for roads, and reform of personal property taxes that businesses pay…

Poll: Is Michigan the True Mitten State?

Wisconsin's travel website is using a mitten image on its travel website; some Michiganians think Wisconsin should keep their hands off our mitten.

Do you think it's thumbs-up or thumbs-down to Wisconsin's use of a mitten image in its winter promotions? According to a story on Mlive.com, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism is using the image of a slightly misshapen mitten to look like the state of Wisconsin on its winter travel site. This has prompted some good-natured jousting between the folks in Wisconsin who think their state is shaped like a mitten, and Michiganians who know there can only be one mitten state. According to the Mlive story: "Dave Lorenz, manager of public and industry relations for the state of Michigan, said the two state tourism agencies are friendly. “We understand their mitten envy,” he said with a chuckle, “but there is only one mitten state, only one Great …

Brave Faces: Michigan Breast Cancer Fighters, Survivors Share Stories

They are our mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmas, husbands, uncles, friends and neighbors — and they all fought breast cancer. These brave Michigan men and women shared their stories with Patch.

We went looking for faces of survival. We found inspiration. Patch asked Michigan women and men who have fought breast cancer to share their struggles, tears and triumphs with us during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer survivor Cynde Lebert, 59, of Canton, tells newly diagnosed women: “You'll be fine. You're alive and that's the most important thing.” Farmington Hills resident Dick Jaeger, 70, is one of the approximately 2,140 men diagnosed each year with breast cancer. "The answer is know your body and don't take anything for granted," Jaeger said. "Every day, I'm a cancer survivor," said Jean Bean, a 58-year-old mom, wife and interior designer from Rochester. "I don't obsess about it, but it's always there." Nancy …

Michigan Looks for Leadership on Jobs, Schools During Obama's Labor Day Visit

What can be done to help Michigan? When Obama stopped in Detroit for his Labor Day speech, Patch talked to Michigan residents about what our national and local leadership can do to foster the state's turnaround.

DETROIT — Thousands of people from throughout Michigan gathered in downtown Detroit Monday afternoon to hear President Obama speak after the annual Labor Day parade. While the president spoke about jobs, labor and the importance of collective bargaining, Patch asked members of the audience to talk about what they would like to see our nation's leaders, as well as those in power locally, do to help the state. Obama teased the crowd about his upcoming speech on jobs, which is planned for Thursday, saying he would propose "ways to put America back to work that both parties would agree to." So what can our leaders in Washington do? Jobs, education: Those were the major themes these Michigan residents echoed. What do you think? Click through …
