NRA Weighs in on Newtown Shooting

The National Rifle Association responded to the shooting tragedy at Newtown, CT in a news conference that was live-streamed on NRA.org at 11 a.m. Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president and chief executive officer of the NRA, spoke to the loss of life in Connecticut before defending the rights of gun owners and talking about some of the larger challenges.  "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a guy is a good guy with a gun," he said. LaPierre also pointed to the violent video games that are so pervasive in modern society. "Here's another dirty little truth that the media does its best to conceal," he said, referring to a "callous, corrupt shadow industry" of "vicious, violent video games." After Newtown Tragedy, NRA to Make 'Meaningful Contributions'

The pro-gun rights group issues statement about preventing future tragedies after shooting that killed 28, including the gunman, in Connecticut.

After days of silence, the National Rifle Association released a statement Tuesday on the tragic shooting in Newtown, saying it will make "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again." In the release, the organization begins to explain its silence, saying: "Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting." Critics had called out the group in the days following the shooting: As citizens and legislators began to fall on either side of a debate about what, if at all, should be done about gun laws, many wondered why the group was absent from the conversation.
