Royal Oak’s Drew Collins, 11, and Trevor Musick, 9, get a chance to show off their skills sinking baskets at the Michigan State Elks Hoop Shoot in Grand Rapids in February.
There isn't a day that goes by that Drew Collins, 11, and Trevor Musick, 9, do not have a basketball in their hands. That dedication has earned the Oak Ridge Elementary students a paid trip to Grand Rapids where they will compete in the Michigan State Elks Hoop Shoot. Drew and Trevor both took home trophies for their basketball shooting at the Elks District Hoop Shoot held in Ferndale on Jan. 5. There were three age groups competing. Each contestant had 25 attempts to make a basket from the free throw line. The boy and girl in each age group with the best score is advancing to compete in the state contest at East Grand Rapids High School on Feb. 23. Drew sank 14 out of 25 baskets; Trevor sank 15 out of 25. “I am really proud of both boys…

Royal Oak City Commission unanimously seeks public safety millage. Citizens group forms to campaign for its approval.
Royal Oak citizens have organized as the Friends of Royal Oak Public Safety to campaign for the success of a 3.975 mill property tax on the November ballot. After years of belt-tightening, including pay reductions by union employees and an overall workforce reduction of 25 percent, the Royal Oak City Commission voted unanimously on August 24 to seek the five-year property tax dedicated to restoring the levels of fire, police and emergency medical services. The Friends committee, chaired by longtime civic leader Clyde Esbri, will hold a fundraising event at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle on Thursday, September 27 from 6:30-10 p.m. The $30 ticket includes appetizers donated by BlackFinn and the performance by comic Chris Porter. 'I feel very fortunate,' Oak Ridge Elementary principal says of the new opportunities and challenges that lie ahead as the new principal of the middle school.
When Zoe Marcus assumes the principal's position at Royal Oak Middle School for the next school year, it will be like going home. Marcus, who is in her fourth year as principal of Oak Ridge Elementary School, had her first full-time teaching position in the Royal Oak school district at Dondero High School, which was the original tenant of the current ROMS building. In fact, her first full-time teaching position ever was at the middle school level for Rochester Community Schools. This will be Marcus’s fourth principal position. Prior to Oak Ridge, Marcus was the principal at Starr Elementary School (now closed), and before that assistant principal at Dondero. So while Marcus is excited about her new position and professional home, she will …
