What Was Your Favorite Moment of the Presidential Inauguration?

There were several highlights during the inauguration ceremony. Tell us what you found to be most memorable.

President Barack Obama was sworn in today for a second term in office. The day was historic in that Obama is one of just a handful of men who have been re-elected to lead the United States. But also that his swearing in fell on the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday and in the 50th anniversary year of King's March on Washington to deliver the "I Have a Dream" speech. Today's festivities included a 19-minute speech from the president in which he gave a shout out to southeast Michigan when he said, "Our journey is not complete until all our children from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherised, and always safe from harm." It also included …

Good Idea/Bad Idea? Presidential Tears

Are you surprised at my tears, sir? Even President Barack Obama cries.

A video of President Barack Obama thanking his campaign staff went viral on Friday. The reason? It featured the reelected president welling up as he reminisced about his humble beginnings in Chicago. After a long, hard-fought campaign — undoubtedly the president's last — it's hard to begrudge the man a few wistful tears. But not everybody thinks Obama is genuine, even in this YouTube video of an unguarded moment in front of close-knit young staffers.  So we put it to you: What do you think of the president's tears? What is this "story"? Is it news? And when he says, "But not everybody thinks Obama is genuine," who is he talking about? Himself? This is like writing an article saying, "but not everybody likes pepperoni pizza. What do you think?" It's stupid. If you're going to say "not everybody thinks..," then you should at least have notable examples. Because I hate to break it to you, Matthew Hampton, …   more ›

Influential Michigan Democrats Say Obama's Auto Bailout Will Resonate at Polls

In our first Blue Mitten survey, most respondents say they agree that President Barack Obama's support for the 2009 auto bailout will help him in Michigan in the November election.

Democratic Michigan insiders said President Barack Obama’s auto bailout will help his chances in the state in the November election: that’s the finding of this week’s inaugural Blue Mitten survey of influential Democrats. Twenty-nine Democrats from the southeastern Michigan area were asked using an automated survey tool what they thought about how the auto bailout will affect Obama’s standing among Democrats and independents in Michigan. Eighteen responses were collected. All of the respondents said they agree or somewhat agree the bailout will help Obama win over Democrats in Michigan. Obama and other Democrats have said the 2009 federal bailout of General Motors and Chrysler saved jobs. “His decisiveness on this issue is palpable …

Christopher your accurate and insight full comments will mean nothing to the Conyers/Stabenow/Levin crowd who have generationally voted with their union card and will never be convinced by such pesky inconvenient things like facts. I'm NOT anti-union; I'm anti-STUPID and to think that the UAW and the SEIU has anyones best interest at heart besides their own ( note I did NOT say their members) is …   more ›

Sen. John McCain Blasts Obama at Utica VFW Hall for 'Draconian' Defense Cuts

During a last-minute visit to Utica Monday to speak to veterans at an American Legion Post 351, Arizona Sen. John McCain told supporters that the GOP would put better policies in place for veterans returning to civilian life.

While campaigning on behalf of Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney Monday at the American Legion Post 351 in Utica, Arizona Sen. John McCain slammed President Barack Obama for looming military cuts and a high unemployment rate for veterans. “There is a 14 percent unemployment rate for veterans nationwide,” said McCain, compared to an eight percent unemployment rate in the U.S. “We should be embarrassed,” he added. McCain, joined by Congresswoman Candice Miller (R-District 10), first held a round table discussion with eight people ranging from local veteran coordinators to military defense contractors. The 2008 GOP presidential nominee told the group that Obama’s “draconian cuts to military spending will not only affect the …

POLL: Democrats, Are You Voting in Today's Primary?

One of the state's high-ranking Democrats says he won't be voting in today's primary.

Michigan Congressman Gary Peters (D-9th District) won't be voting in today's Democratic primary election. Neither will Farmington Hills Mayor Barry Brickner. The two elected officials say there's no reason for them to go to the polls today, because Democrats will be choosing their candidate – President Barack Obama – in statewide caucuses on May 5.  And even those won't offer much action.  "There's only one person running, so it's going to be a real quickie," Brickner said. Michigan Democratic Party officials passed a resolution earlier this month that allows Democrats to vote in the primary and at their caucuses. In the resolution, officials accused Secretary of State Ruth Johnson of "partisan mischief," confusing voters over a party rule…

They say that when something is repeated enough that some people start taking it as fact. Looks like you bought that story lock, stock and barrel! So they planted that story in the brains of the Clintons, several other top political leaders from both parties and many other foreign leaders? Come on, you can't be that naive. Obama Talks to GM Workers on Orion Plant Tour

GM employees describe to President Barack Obama how Korea and the United States work together to produce vehicles at the Orion Assembly plant.

Employees of the General Motors Orion Assembly provided an in-depth description Friday of the multinational manufacturing process involved in making the Chevrolet Sonic as U.S. President Barack Obama and his South Korean counterpart watched. The president, with his sleeves rolled up, and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who was wearing a Detroit Tigers cap, listened intently and asked questions of the employees as they toured the assembly line. Daniel Leich of Shelby Township, supply chain director for the plant, shared with the presidents how manufacturing procedures have "improved the efficiency and quality focus of our operations." As he moved along the line, others shared their expertise, including Dayna Moose of Royal Oak, a …
