Police Chief Replies to Millage Questions

Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue answers questions about the Nov. 6 public safety ballot measure in Royal Oak.

Questions and comments have been pouring in to Royal Oak Patch since the Royal Oak City Commission unanimously voted in July to start the process to put a referendum on the ballot asking the voters for a public safety millage of 3.975 mills over five years. To answer readers' questions, Patch talked to Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue. Here are his answers to frequently asked questions: If this is being billed as a public safety millage why does a portion of the millage go to hire an additional city attorney? In addition to bringing the number of sworn police officers to 79 and maintaining minimum fire department on-duty staffing of 14, funds from the millage would restore two code enforcement officers and add an assistant city attorney. “…

Why do there continue to be unpaved-no sidewalk streets in RO. Washington and Custer between Lexington and 13 Mile are examples. These streets become jarringly potholed almost to the point of being impassible during winter, spring and rainy weather. No sidewalks makes them so dangerous for pedestrians and dogwalkers all year long, but especially in winter and during the night.   more ›

REPLAY: Did You Miss the Public Safety Town Hall Event?

Did you miss the public safety forum last week? Here's City Manager Donald Johnson's presentation showing what the millage will accomplish.

About 30 members of the community attended the Public Safety Town Hall event at Oak Ridge Elementary last Wednesday evening to listen, learn and ask questions of city officials, including Royal Oak City Manager Donald Johnson, Interim Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue, Fire Chief Chuck Thomas and Mayor Jim Ellison. In the city manager's PowerPoint presentation, Johnson touched on city's operating tax history, outlined its current financial situation and made some projections about the near future. Here are some of the highlights of Johnson remarks. When compared to its neighbors, Royal Oak's millage rate at 11.7261 is near the bottom end of the spectrum, Johnson said. (See slide no. 4.) Of the city's immediate neighbors, Hazel Park (34.0284…

Need to Know: Royal Oak's Public Safety Millage

Residents will decide a 5-year millage of up to 3.975 mills in the Nov. 6 general election.

Among the two funding issues facing Royal Oak voters in November is the city's public safety millage. The Royal Oak City Commission unanimously approved the ballot language for the 5-year levy in August. The move followed a Police Operations Analysis and Fire Operations Analysis prepared by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), a nonprofit public safety consultant, which commissioners reviewed in February and March. What: Royal Oak voters will decide whether to adopt a 3.975-mill tax to support police, fire and emergency medical services. When: Nov. 6; all 24 precincts will be open and staffed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Why: Ballot language reads: "Over the past eight years, the City of Royal Oak has cut its full-time …

Hey are you just waking up to the fact that Arts Beats and Eats is not supported only by the DDA.? It is said that PT Barnum claimed that a sucker is born every minute. I think Royal Oak can beat that. I would support a special events unit if it required the DDA and Jon Witz to support it exclusively and had twelve hour shifts WITHOUT taxpayer supported overtime. You know, like Beaumont Hospital …   more ›

Public Safety Millage on City Commission Agenda Tonight

Also on the agenda Monday are Gov. Rick Snyder’s road improvement proposals, Crime Prevention Council recommendations, rodent problems and more.

The Royal Oak City Commission meets tonight to discuss a wide variety of subjects. At their 7:30 p.m. regular meeting at City Hall, city officials are expected to discuss a variety of matters including proposed ballot language for the millage request. Tonight commissioners will vote on ballot language for Proposal A, which is a proposed amendment to the Royal Oak City Charter to allow for a police, fire and Emergency Medical Service millage. The ballot language calls for a five-year tax levy to support public safety at a maximum rate of 3.975 mills. If approved, the ballot proposal will go before voters at the general election on Nov. 6. In October, Gov. Rick Snyder offered several proposals for increased funding for Michigan's …

Royal Oak: Send Us Your Public Safety Millage Questions

Leave a comment on this story to tell us what you'd like to know about the public safety millage and we'll do our best to find out!

Questions and comments have been pouring in to Royal Oak Patch since the Royal Oak City Commission unanimously voted to start the process to put a referendum on the ballot this November asking the voters for a public safety millage of 3.975 mills over five years. Interim Chief Corrigan O’Donohue has stated that police operations, with only 66 sworn officers, are at critical staffing levels. In the last four years the Royal Oak Police Department lost nearly 40 percent of its staff. Ten years ago the department had 102 sworn officers. "The men and women of the Royal Oak Police Department do an incredible job, but it is unsustainable," O'Donohue told the audience at the Royal Oak Safe Neighborhoods Community Dialogue in June. The chief …

There are some fat pensions given out to former Royal Oak city retirees. In a time where the city needs to lay off police officers to pay for the pensions of the retirees, something needs to change. These pension figures are available online   more ›

Letters to the Editor

Letter to Editor: Royal Oak Detective Urges Support for Public Safety Millage

After nearly a decade of cuts and decreasing resources, a Royal Oak detective believes the city's public safety services are "perilously close to the breaking point."

The following letter was sent to Royal Oak Patch by Patrick Stanton, a Royal Oak resident and a member of the Royal Oak Detectives Association for 11 years: As both a resident who raises a family in the city and as an employee who helps protect this city, I urge support for the Public Safety Millage. I can proudly state that despite years upon years of deep cuts to our agency and the corresponding loss of select services to the citizens that the officers, detectives and command officers of the Royal Oak Police Department have continued to defy the odds and honorably provide excellent police services. As a former officer in the United States Army, I see the same tireless service and attention to detail that my soldiers displayed during two …
