Royal Oak Test Scores Could Take a Hit Under New Standards

A look at Royal Oak students' recent MEAP and MME scores under the state's new 'cut scores' show a drop in the percentage deemed 'proficient.'

The Michigan Department of Education released what it calls a “retrospective look” at how students would have fared on past MEAP and MME exams if recently adopted scoring standards had been in place — and Royal Oak Schools' test scores showed the same decline in proficiency levels seen statewide. The new standards, adopted by the State Board of Education in September, changed state cut scores — the scores used by schools to determine whether a student is advanced, proficient, partially proficient or not proficient in certain subjects. Overall, the results released Thursday show there would have been a major decline in student test scores on the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) and the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) in math, …

Parents beware, your child has become a victim of society and the MIchigan Department of Education. Its not the student nor the teacher. A standardized test is not a true measure and Lansing is aware. They now count students in Special Ed. and bilingual many of the students are learning distable and/or have only been in the states for more than a year or two and are expected to read/write at an …   more ›

Fans rush the field after thrilling end to game in which ROHS beats St. Clair Shores Lake Shore, 21-20.

In its first game under new head coach Jeff Hill, Royal Oak High School won its first game in more than three seasons. Students and other fans spilled out onto the field Thursday night as the Ravens beat St. Clair Shores Lake Shore, 21-20. "This sight will be etched in my mind for the rest of my life," Royal Oak senior running back Nolan Jones said after the game. "I will never forget this." Lake Shore gave Royal Oak a scare when it scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter and went for the 2-point conversion for the win. But the effort failed with 25 second left, giving the Ravens – and the wider Royal Oak community – a huge victory. Small Steps: Tough Task Ahead For New Royal Oak Football Coach

Jeff Hill is ready to rebuild the Ravens program and stop its three seasons winless streak.

Winning football games isn’t easy. No one knows that better than the Royal Oak High School football program. It hasn’t won a single game since 2007.  The Ravens have had three straight 0-9 seasons. Only four times in those 27 games has their opponent’s margin of victory been fewer than 20 points. Jeff Hill was named Royal Oak’s new head coach back in January. The former Royal Oak Dondero High School graduate takes over the team after coaching Milford to a 15-12 record in three seasons. Hill is throwing out all that recent history at his new school. It won’t be quick and it won’t be easy, but Hill is trying to turn the page and move the team forward. Just days before his debut on the sideline for the Ravens he talked to Royal Oak Patch …
