Police Department Recognizes Explosion Heroes

At Monday's Royal Oak City Commission meeting, citizens are praised for their actions following a house explosion on Cooper Avenue.

Praised for rescuing an elderly woman, James Greenway, Kate Sikora and Oakland County Sheriff's Office Detective Sgt. Greg Glover received a Royal Oak Police Department Citizen Award for their actions following a house explosion on Feb. 27. Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue presented a certificate to each at Monday's City Commission meeting. Greenway, a 2012 Royal Oak High School graduate and an Eagle Scout, was working at Joe's Army Navy when the incident occurred. The explosion blew out the window at the army surplus shop. "James heard a woman crying for help," said O'Donohue. "He entered the unstable structure through a hole in the wall and located an elderly woman buried under the rubble." This does seem ridiculous however there is a problem with downtown parking creeping into neighborhoods in search of free parking. Unfortunately our commission behaves like a hungry shark feeding voraciously at every opportunity. Here are two solutions that I am sure will be ignored by the "shark"': 1. Bastone Brewery to Add Space on First, Second Floors

Royal Oak City Commission approves proposal to expand the popular downtown restaurant and bar by 45 seats.

Bastone Brewery is growing up – literally – after the Royal Oak City Commission on Monday unanimously approved a plan to increase its indoor seating capacity. The restaurant and pub plans to add seating space to the Main Street building's second floor by eliminating office space previously leased to a tenant. The proposal adds 22 tabletop seats and five bar stools to the first floor and 18 new seats on the second floor, expanding from a capacity of 421 guests to 466. Royal Oak Police said it believes an additional 45 seats will have minimal impact on its department. In May, a request was made to add an outdoor service area on top of Café Habana, which is part of the same building, for 30 patrons. That request has been put on hold until the…
