7:00 p.m.: During the Birmingham Public Schools press conference, officials confirmed the death of longtime West Maple Elementary School teacher Harry Berkowitz, of Franklin. Earlier in the day, police said they believe the person inside the Royal Oak home might be connected to a suspicious death in Franklin. Citizen alerted police to man scaling a metal pipe to get into the building, police said.
Update: Today, Paul Edward Murray was arraigned by Judge Derek Meinecke at the 44th District Court for unlawful entry with $5,000 cash or surety bond. A pretrial date will be set for a later date. April 29, 3:22 p.m.: A man was arrested at a Royal Oak church on Monday morning after a witness noticed the man scaling a metal pipe behind the building. Around 5:53 a.m. Monday, a citizen reported seeing a man climbing up a metal pipe at the rear of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 814 N. Incidents in most crime categories dropped in Royal Oak in 2012, according to the Royal Oak Police Department’s 2012 Annual Report. Group A offenses, which include murder, robbery, assault and motor vehicle theft dropped 12.2 percent in Royal Oak. The city did see two additional arson for a total of three, and there was a 15 percent jump in disorderly conduct cases, up from 1,183 in 2011 to 1,359 in 2012. Police say similar attacks occurred in Birmingham and West Bloomfield.
Royal Oak Police are investigating an armed robbery that happened Wednesday in the 2700 block of Bamlet St. Police say two elderly residents were emptying groceries in their driveway at around 5:41 p.m. when they were approcahed by a man asking to use their phone, stating he was having car trouble. The man then indicated he had a gun and demanded cash. After taking an undisclosed amount of money the man fled the area on foot, according to police. The couple was not injured. The suspect is described as a light-skinned black man, 5-feet 10-inches to 6-feet 1-inch tall, 200-220 pounds, and approximately 30-40 years-old. Ryker, an 18-month-old Dutch Shepherd dog, has already been put to work, according to the police chief.
Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue announced the newest members of his team to Royal Oak City Commissioners on Monday night, including the police department's youngest member, an 18-month-old male Dutch Shepherd dog. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, Ryker, greeted city officials with a tennis ball in his mouth. Partnered with Officer Richard Chipman, the pair competed a six-week training course in Denver, IN, finishing at the top of their class, according to the chief. When Ryker is not hard at work tracking, drug-sniffing, and helping with apprehension control, he stays with Chipman, who describes his 70-pound partner as having a lot of energy and drive. Car of Madison Heights man contained hand tools, small power tools believed to be stolen from Royal Oak vehicles and garages.
Royal Oak police have taken into custody a 33-year-old Madison Heights man believed to be involved in vehicle and garage break-ins. Anthony Michael Carroll has been charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer, a five-year felony, and driving while license suspended, a 93-day misdemeanor. He was arraigned today at the 44th District Court before Magistrate Kenneth Roy. Caroll is believed to be involved in a series of early morning and daytime thefts that include hand tools, small power tools and gasoline from various residential locations, according Interim Chief Corrigan O'Donohue. How about fitting a trained K-9 with a minicam and let the dog into the house. If the minicam shows the dog is in danger the dog could be ordered remotely to back down, or attack depending on the situation. In case of homicides the dog is more valuable than the life of an alleged murderer who refuses to surrender, This could shorten the time involved and reduce risk to police surrounding the home…   more ›
