Climb On Board: Bandage Removed from Zoo's Hippo Sculpture

The Detroit Zoo's beloved 'Sleeping Hippo' sculpture is ready to greet children of all ages this morning when the zoo opens at 10 a.m.

The barricades are down, the bandage is removed, and the Detroit Zoo's favorite greeter is ready this morning to meet you at the zoo. Children get ready to climb on top the hippo's back, crawl through her belly and slide down her nose. After months of being under wraps, the Sleeping Hippo has been repaired and polished. Last winter zoo officials wrapped Sleeping Hippo, the work of Russian artist Samuel Cashwan (1900-89), in plastic and placed temporary guardrails around her to keep visitors from playing on her. "She is showing her age. (She has) some cracks, but she can be saved," said Patricia Janeway in February, the zoo's communications director. "We are awaiting warmer temperatures to perform the restorative measures." Integrity …

UPDATE: Detroit Zoo's Beloved Hippo Sculpture Needs TLC

The cast terrazzo hippo near the zoo's entrance is in critical condition, but staff say help is on the way.

The oval cavity in the torso of the lovable hippo that greets visitors at the main entrance of the Detroit Zoo is the least of her worries. It's her cracks that are starting to make her look under the weather. Zoo officials have wrapped Sleeping Hippo, the work of Russian artist Samuel Cashwan (1900-89), in plastic and placed temporary guardrails around her to keep visitors from playing on her. "She is showing her age. (She has) some cracks, but she can be saved," said Patricia Janeway, the zoo's communications director. I loved the hippo but always thought that Marshall Fredericks was the sculptor so I learned something new!! My other favorite was the boy and bear at Northland Mall which I hope is still around!! That would be another great addition to the zoo!!   more ›
