Rep. Sander Levin (D-Royal Oak) kicks off the annual Student Inaugural Address Competition at a Birmingham high school Wednesday. Levin, who represents Michgan's 9th congressional district, will visit an AP Government class at Birmingham's Groves High School Wednesday to officially mark the beginning of the competition. During the competition, high school students throughout the 9th congressional district are invited to submit, via video, their own two-three minute inaugural address explaining their vision for the country's future. The U.S. House went along with a Senate plan Tuesday to address expiring Bush-era tax cuts while delaying spending cuts.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted 257-167 late Tuesday night to endorse a Senate vote on a bill that would avert the so-called "Fiscal Cliff." This bill extends the tax cuts passed during George W. Bush's presidency that would have expired on Jan. 1, and delays automatic spending cuts. A complete list of the yeas and nays can be found on the website for the House of Representatives. U.S. Rep. Sander Levin, D-Royal Oak, voted for the bill, which will extend curent tax rates for all wage earners making below $400,000 and couples making below $450,000. The League of Women Voters Oakland Area and Patch will co-sponsor a candidate forum for the 9th Congressional district on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Madison Heights City Hall. The forum will feature the two candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrat Sander Levin and Republican Don Volaric. The League of Women Voters also has invited Libertarian candidate Jim Fulner, U.S. Taxpayers candidate Les Townsend and Green Party candidate Julia Williams. Macomb County businessman Don Volaric will face U.S. Rep. Sander Levin in the general election to represent Michigan's 9th Congressional District in Washington.
Macomb County businessman Don Volaric won the Republican primary Tuesday in the 9th Congressional District Primary Tuesday to face incumbent Sander Levin. With 100 percent of Oakland and Macomb County precincts reporting, Volaric defeated Gregory Dildilian in the Republican primary and will face Levin in the general election, according to unofficial results. Levin, who was unopposed in the primary, has served in Congress since 1982. The candidates are running in the newly redrawn district which includes southern Macomb and Oakland counties.

In a Facebook post and email message to supporters this afternoon, Congressman Gary Peters (D-9th Congressional) announced his intention to run in the newly drawn 14th Congressional District, thus avoiding a race against Rep. Sander Levin (D-12th Congressional) in a newly redrawn District 9. His decision will likely pit Peters against Rep. Hansen Clarke (D-13th Congressional) in a 2012 Democratic primary; Clarke has also announced he will run for the seat. The new legislative maps mean new boundaries for state House, state Senate and congressional districts.
On Tuesday, Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation redrawing legislative boundaries for state House, state Senate and congressional districts. For Royal Oak, that means one congressman, starting with the 2012 election. Royal Oak remains in District 26, led by Jim Townsend (D), who also represents Madison Heights. Royal Oak remains in District 13, led by John Pappageorge (R). The district includes Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Clawson and Troy. New to District 13 is part of Rochester Hills; gone are Bloomfield Township and Madison Heights. Because of term limits, this is Pappageorge's final term.
