Letter to the Editor: Vote Yes for Royal Oak Sinking Fund

If sinking fund proposal is approved, the cost to the average Royal Oak taxpayer will be less than $30 per year.

The following letter was sent to Royal Oak Patch by Pam Shewchuck, a Royal Oak resident: I urge Royal Oak voters to vote “yes” on the sinking fund proposal for Royal Oak Schools. As a 23 year Royal Oak resident and an active member of the Royal Oak Schools community, I am well aware of the importance of quality schools to provide a positive learning experience. Unfortunately, our infrastructure is suffering in our schools. Drive through the Royal Oak High School parking lot, or attend a class in one of the elementary schools where the boiler is on it's last legs - and you will understand the desperate need for fixing our infrastructure. Its only one percent, and that will bring in quite a lot by the looks of how Royal Oak is growing in both the public and private sector. Maybe a year or two will bring back bussing. Its only one percent, hardly lunch once a month at Comet Burger for most homes. Like our fallible commission that lacks foward planning in its own budget the school board is made up of citizens with other …   more ›

Schools Millage Proposal Approved for Nov. 6 Ballot

A building and site sinking fund, paid for with a 10-year, 1.0-mill levy, would help make repairs at schools in Royal Oak.

The Nov. 6 election picture in Royal Oak became clearer as ballot language for a building and site sinking fund millage to benefit Royal Oak Schools was approved Thursday. The 1.0-mill levy ($1 per $1,000 of taxable valuation) will, if approved by voters, take place for a 10-year period from July 2013-23. Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin said citizens should consider the millage because it is “responsible, reasonable and right.” “A sinking fund provides a mechanism for meeting capital needs on an ongoing basis, rather than allowing a crisis to develop,” Lewis-Lakin said in his presentation. A recent capital needs assessment identified nearly $20 million in projects, with the largest single item being roof replacements. At its meeting, the …
