'Shop Local' Holiday Season Push Gets a Boost on Small Business Saturday

Royal Oak stores to participate in Nov. 24 promotion that features $25 incentive from American Express to 'shop small.'

This seasonal greeting comes from hometown merchants: Don't be in thrall to the mall. They're spreading the word via social media and window signs with help from American Express, organizer of the second annual Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24. The credit card issuer promotes a nationwide "day for everyone — from the business owners who create jobs to the customers who buy locally — to support small businesses that invigorate the economy and keep communities thriving," it explains online. "It began in 2010 when American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year. Last year, over 100 million people came out to shop at independently-owned small …

Congressman, Senators Push Legislation to Help Unemployed Entrepreneurs

State law changes would allow them to collect unemployment benefits while building a small business.

During a press conference at the Southfield Public Library today, State Senators Vincent Gregory (D-14th District) and Virgil Smith (D-4th District) and U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-9th Congressional) discussed their collaborative efforts to help unemployed entrepreneurs through Self-Employment Assistance. Gregory and Smith have introduced bills to allow out-of-work Michiganders to collect unemployment insurance benefits while working toward the launch of a new small business. Starting a new business is a full time job in itself and providing the incentive would help spur new economic development opportunities and create new jobs, the lawmakers say. In Congress, Peters helped write the STARTUP Act and pass key provisions into law that provide …

Small Business Saturday Puts Royal Oak on the Map for Holiday Shopping

The second annual event has shoppers lining up inside city shops downtown.

Royal Oak, a mecca of restaurants, retail stores, entertainment venues and more, got the opportunity to show off all that it has to offer during the second annual Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26. “These businesses add to the interest of our city,” said Lorene Branch, downtown shopper and Royal Oak resident. "Royal Oak has always been a destination and having unique and creative, individual businesses keeps that going and makes people want to live here and makes people want to shop here.” Customers darted out first thing in the morning to support the local shops, and in turn, received discounts and deals from the stores themselves as well as a special $25 rebate incentive from American Express. “Shopping local is so important; if you …

50+ Places to Party Tonight in Oakland County

Wednesday, the night before Thanksgiving, is traditionally the biggest bar night of the year. Here's our list of your best bets.

Thanksgiving Eve is traditionally the busiest bar night of the year and Oakland County business owners are gearing up for a fun night and holiday weekend. Here's a roundup of places to go this evening. We invite you to add your favorite to the list. The Emory's general manager, Emily Husband, said the night is a busy one for bars because "most people come home for Thanksgiving and want to get together with the friends and family they haven't seen all year. ... We're tapping a firkin this year, not necessarily in order to increase business, but to do something fun and different." What's a firkin, you ask? "It is a keg of the Livery Brewery Action Jackson IPA that will be on the bar top all evening until it runs out. Really, though, the …

Mannequins Bring Life to That Girl Storefront

The story behind the mannequins and messages gracing the downtown Royal Oak shop's ever-changing window display.

Regardless of their mode of transport, people on Washington Avenue tend to have one thing in common as they pass the corner of Washington at Lincoln: Their heads turn to the northwest corner. The cause of their rubbernecking? The unconventional, ever-changing window displays at That Girl Clothing Resale. Featuring a pair of mannequins with 6-foot banners stretching above their heads, the window displays on either side of the store’s entrance change almost every week, aiming to promote the store. But they’re not your run-of-the-mill mannequins, and the banners aren’t your typical "sale" signs. The life-size dummies have names, and the slogans in their respective windows help define their distinctly different identities. “People look forward…

Poll: Who Makes the Best Chili in Royal Oak?

This weekend there were two chili cook-offs in Royal Oak where people weighed in on the hottest chili in town.

As the thermometer drops, it’s only natural to want to eat foods that make us feel warm and cozy. That was evident this chilly weekend — or make that chili weekend — when Royal Oak had not one, but two chili cook-offs. St. Mary’s Men’s Club and the Royal Oak Jaycees each held cook-offs featuring local restaurants Saturday.  St. Mary’s also had an amateur division for individuals who wanted to participate. “It’s a fun event and we have a good turnout,” parishioner Mary Therese Hammer said. “It’s really more about fellowship than food.” Hammer won the amateur division last year. Grand Trunk Club, Lockhart’s, Royal Oak Brewery, Rock on 3rd, Andiamo and Dooley’s participated in the St. Mary’s Men’s Club fundraiser at the church’s parish center…

Countdown to Thanksgiving, Day 7: Let Someone Else Do the Work

Local markets, hotels and caterers serve up a cornucopia of pick-up options for the big feast.

Follow along with Megan Swoyer as she prepares for Thanksgiving, with daily tips to keep you on track.  Day 7 offers tips for takeout, from sides to the whole meal. One of my friends is a bit freaked about hosting Thanksgiving at her boyfriend’s home.  “I’m a little crazed,” she told me. “His kids will be there and all of that (he’s divorced and has children who live out East). While she was sharing this with me, I was simultaneously reading email and had serendipitously received a note from the owners of Canapé Cart in Ferndale. “Hey,” I told my friend. “You can order all of your sides from this great place. It won’t be like you’re not cooking; you’re just making it easier and you can get to know his family better, etc. by not being a …

Countdown to Thanksgiving, Day 6: Get Your Game On!

What to do when Uncle Kenny hits the couch for a snooze and Grandma won’t move from the dinner table.

The Turkey Day Countdown Day 6 follows The List, Delegation, Choosing a wine, Gravy and The Turkey. While I was in Trevarrow Ace Hardware in Troy the other day, checking out aluminum baking pans for the Jennie-O turkey experiment last weekend (I opted for the pan without handles – less expensive!), I wandered into the candle aisle  and lo and behold, I spotted my first Thanksgiving Day game prize — Yankee Candle votives, at $2 each. A hardware store is chockfull of affordable surprises at every turn. Ranging in scents from the new “Cherries on Snow” to “Pumpkin Pie” to “Sparkling Cinnamon,” these votives are as festive as you can get. Who can’t use a few new candles to jumpstart the holiday season? I’m known as “mistress of games” in my …

Countdown to Thanksgiving, Day 3: Choosing the Right Wine

You can serve anything from a Riesling to a Rose with the big bird, say area wine experts.

Day 1 was The List; Day 2 was Delegation Day. Here's Day 3 of the Turkey Day planning process: If anyone knows about wine it’s Linda Jones of the Lansing-based Michigan Grape and Wine Industry Council. Come Turkey time, Jones starts contemplating her favorite pairings with a Thanksgiving feast.  “For a Pure Michigan Thanksgiving dinner, I’d suggest with turkey a dry or semi-dry Riesling, perhaps by St. Julian, Chateau Grand Traverse, Black Star Farms, Bowers Harbor or other Michigan producers,” she said.  Michigan wines are available at a variety of different stores in the area, including Meijer,  Westborn Market in Berkley and Cloverleaf Fine Wine in Royal Oak. “Michigan wineries make a variety of Rieslings of varying sweetness levels," …

Countdown to Thanksgiving, Day 2: Delegate, Delegate, Delegate

It's Day 2 in Megan's "12 Days of Thanksgiving." On the path of organization, she is focusing on potluck pleasures and family chores.

I never feel bad about delegating, and that's how we do Thanksgiving in my house. This goes for cleaning, too. Today, I’ll ask my sons to wash the dining room windows (I know they’ve been dying to do this) and my husband will help me do a thorough job of dusting my cabinet of tchotchkes, which everyone seems to look at when they come to our home. My husband also is hanging new blinds today that will help cut back on reflection and glare on the television when everyone’s tuned into the Lions at 12:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Day 1, we made a list (Did you make a list? If not, there's time to catch up.) Today, refer to your list and jot down more specifics on what you’d like everyone to do and bring.  Carolyn Hefner, owner of The China …
