Football looks to better matchup, girls golf winning, cross-country posts best times and more.

Highlights of what’s happening in Royal Oak High School varsity sports: A 49-14 loss on the road to Lake Orion on Friday night brings the Ravens' record to 1-4, but head football coach Jeff Hill is focused on the progress his players are making on the field. “We played good defense,” Hill said of his team’s performance against Lake Orion. “We held them scoreless for a quarter and a half, but some mistakes toward the end of the second quarter allowed them to score 14 points.” Still working his plan of implementing fundamentals and improving each player’s football mentality, Hill is seeing improvement. “Our kids are playing better and their technique is improving each week,” he said. Weekly Sports Roundup: Ravens Football Set for First Away Game

Royal Oak High School girls volleyball has two tough matches while boys soccer plays two with Avondale this week.

Highlights of what’s happening in Royal Oak High School varsity sports: West Bloomfield High School came to Royal Oak's home field last week and picked up its first win of the season over the Ravens, 39-21. Royal Oak is now 1-2 on the year. For the first time this season, the Ravens will hit the road and travel to Troy Athens High (2-1) for a 7 p.m. game Friday. The varsity team is at full strength for the first time since the beginning of the season, according to Head Coach Jeff Hill. "We've got everybody back and we're pretty excited," Hill said. Hill and his staff have been busy preparing for the Athens ground game. "I've watched all three of their games this season and all of their games from last year and they are a very, very solid …

Football team suffers first loss and boys soccer puts together a win streak highlight this week.

With Labor Day celebrated and full class schedules in motion, fall sports teams were in action this past week at Royal Oak High School. The football team lost a tough battle to rival Troy High School but the four-game losing streak for the boy's soccer is over. Here's a look at this past week's sports action: Troy High School came to Royal Oak and won the battle of the trenches and put a 56-20 division win over the Ravens. The loss evens the team's record at 1-1 on the year. Winless West Bloomfield (0-2) visits Raven Field on Friday night. Four tough losses opened the season for new coach Anna Lukezich but this past week saw the team pick up two straight wins. On Tuesday a 2-1 road win over Andover gave the team its first victory of the …

Royal Oak Weekly Sports Wrap-up

A win for the new football coach, a freshman on the run and a host of games and matches on tap for this week. Welcome to fall sports, Royal Oak style.

Royal Oak schools sports teams kicked off the fall season with an impressive gridiron victory for new high school football coach Jeff Hill, who led his team to its first victory in 28 games. Here's a look at the first week's action: Football The Royal Oak High School football team pulled out a 21-20 victory over St. Clair Shores Lake Shore on Aug. 25 to put its first "W" in the books in nearly four years. Fans flowed onto the field, overjoyed at the end to the long drought. It came down to the Ravens denying a two-point conversion attempt to win the game – and the rest is history. Next up: A home game at 7 p.m. today against Troy, which lost its opener to Romeo last week. Cross-country Freshman Ben Hill finished seventh to lead the team in…

Ravens Hope New Football Coach Brings Success on Field, in Community

Royal Oak High School's new leader works to end team's three-year winless drought as it preps for first game of the season Thursday.

After three consecutive winless seasons, the Royal Oak High School varsity football team is eager to turn around its fortunes – and the community is ready to rally around them. New head coach Jeff Hill, a Royal Oak native and Dondero High School graduate, was hired in January to replace Dave Potter. Hill faces the task of ending the Ravens’ losing streak that dates back to 2007. Hill was 15-13 in three years as the head coach at Milford High School, including a playoff appearance in 2008. Hill said the team is focused on getting a fresh start this year. “We can’t control what happened in the past, and we tell the kids that,” Hill said. “All we can do is work hard every day, make our investment and eventually we’ll get to the point where we…

Royal Oak High School Soccer Gets a Fresh Start

A new coach and a revamped roster bring optimism for the coming season.

For this year’s Royal Oak High School varsity boys soccer team, a new year means a new start. After a disappointing 2-13-4 season last year, the Ravens are turning to a new coach and several new players to help turn the program around. The Ravens’ new coach is Anna Lukezich, hired by Athletic Director Brian Gordon to replace Jason Windsor, who resigned last fall. Lukezich, who teaches graphic design at the high school, has coached soccer at other levels and served as a player/coach while at Alma College. Gordon said Lukezich was “by far” the most qualified person who applied for the job. “She has an amazing amount of experience at a lot of different levels of soccer,” Gordon said. “She played college soccer herself, and she’s a teacher in …

Orvis Expert Teaches Fly Fishing to Newcomers

Royal Oak sporting goods store offers free Fly Fishing 101 class to help grow the sport.

Golf has long been a popular sport for many people looking to take advantage of Michigan’s warm summer weather, but according to Rich Merlino, another sport is emerging. “Fly fishing seems to be becoming the new golf,” Merlino said. “I had three guys who needed a private lesson for fly fishing because they have a business trip out to Montana. I’m hearing more and more guys say they’re coming off of the golf course and into the streams.” Merlino, who has 33 years of fishing experience, is the fishing manager of Royal Oak’s Orvis sporting goods store, located on Woodward just north of 12 Mile.
