¡Muy Bien! Downtown Royal Oak Bars Give Back to Community

Tequila Blue/526 Main donate proceeds from a Cinco de Mayo celebration to the ROOTS foundation to enrich the quality of life in Royal Oak.

A downtown bar presented a big check to Royal Oak Opportunity to Serve (ROOTS) at Monday night's City Commission meeting. Andrea Makar from ROOTS accepted a check for $4,000, proceeds from a Cinco de Mayo celebration, from Josh Baker, the general manager of 526 Main/Tequila Blue. ROOTS' mission is to encourage philanthropy, strengthen the spirit of the community and enrich the quality of life in Royal Oak. "We are earmarking this money to seed a large event we have planned for next May for safety and park improvements," Makar said as she accepted the check. On May 4-5, Tequila Blue fenced off the parking lot at the corner of Sixth and Center streets and set up a large tent for a fiesta that included a pig roast and live music for adults …

3 New Places to Eat Outdoors in Royal Oak

Sidewalk cafes have been open for business since April 15, but recently three new options have popped up to enjoy lunch or dinner and the art of people watching.

There is no better place to experience downtown Royal Oak’s various hipsters, motorcycles, and dog walkers than from one of the city's many sidewalk cafes. There are now three more options for people watching. Still partially under construction, Pizzeria Biga has terraced and patio seating for 24 patrons. Planters and a fire pit are still being constructed. The location is ideal for train lovers as the seating runs along the railroad tracks. Pizzeria Biga opened on April 23. Zumba’s moved across Main Street to its new location next to the Emagine Theatre on May 11 and quickly added outdoor seats. Still a work in progress, plans submitted to the City Commission show the sidewalk café will eventually serve 24 patrons and be enclosed by a 36-…

A quick question for the Downtown Development Authority: Why is it whenever developers come to Royal Oak you give them taxpayer $$$...and how long do you expect residents to underwrite public safety costs for the downtown? The DDA handed over $300 K to the millionaire owner of Emagine. I wonder how many hundred K they’ll end up throwing at the Hotel developer. The DDA only pays for 3 police …   more ›
