Woodward Avenue Eateries Preserve Taste of Cruising

Recipes from bygone restaurants Ted's Drive Inn, Totem Pole Drive-In, Maverick's Drive-In and the Susie Q are alive and well at Duggan's Irish Pub in Royal Oak and the Blarney Stone Pub in Berkley.

The iconic restaurants that fueled cruisers during the heyday of car culture along Woodward Avenue may be mere memories, but diners looking for a taste of the era still can find some of the original recipes in Royal Oak and Berkley. Favorites – including burgers and fish sandwiches – from Ted's Drive Inn, Maverick's Drive-In, the Susie Q and Totem Pole Drive-In have been preserved at Duggan's Irish Pub in Royal Oak and the Blarney Stone Pub in Berkley. The late Larry Payne Sr. – a cruiser himself – began acquiring the recipes in 1984 after he opened Duggan's, according to his son Larry Payne Jr., who now owns the business. It was in the nick of time: The Hund sisters, who owned the Totem Pole, were in assisted living when his dad made …

Bouchard's Opponent Makes Dream Cruise Helicopter Lawsuit a Campaign Issue

Challenger Jane Boudreau said the incident is endemic of a bigger problem that voters should consider on Nov. 6.

A civil lawsuit filed against Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard for actions taken by department helicopter pilot Bill Christensen to disperse a crowd during the Woodward Dream Cruise is now the focus of his challenger's campaign just two days before the vote. . Democrat Jane Boudreau issued a series of press releases over the weekend to publicize the lawsuit and spark her campaign to unseat the incumbent Republican. The complaint, filed Friday before Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Rae Lee Chabot, alleges that the pilot acted under Bouchard's orders when he flew below the allowable height by the FAA to disperse a crowd during the Woodward Dream Cruise on Aug. 18. Terry McIninch, the plaintiff, claims the helicopter’s rotor wash …

Police: Woodward Dream Cruise Dos and Don'ts

Here's what you need to know to stay safe and avoid getting into trouble during Woodward Dream Cruise 2012.

There are many ways to enjoy the 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise, but if there's anything local police are trying drive home to participants this year is that Saturday is a family affair. And that it's alcohol free. "Remember, this is a family event, minimize the alcohol intake, maximize the viewing pleasure of the nostalgic cars and don’t entice the cruisers to spin their tires," said Chief Richard Matott of the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety. "Spinning tires enhance the “Wow” factor but the public is in greater danger than they realize by being in such close proximity to a car spinning it’s tires that could go out of control." Of Interest: Officers will be looking for cruisers who are driving recklessly on Woodward Avenue, …

R Jeppostal is advocating that people who drive drunk should do so in Birmingham. This is known as Solicitaion of a Crime, which is a criminal offense. Any person who "encourages or requests another person to engage in specific conduct which would constitute such crime" is commiting an offense of soliciatation. The crime solicited need not be committed. Birmingham Patch should notifify the proper…   more ›

Woodward Dream Cruise Has Regional Economic Payoff

The event will generate approximately $56 million for businesses in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties – as well as international exposure for the area – but some merchants along the route say their sales take a dive during the event.

The Woodward Dream Cruise brings big bucks and international exposure to communities along the historic avenue each August, but business owners say the event is a blessing and a curse. The cruise benefits the region as a whole – with hotels and restaurants throughout Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties coming out as winners – but results in soft sales and shuttered doors for many merchants along the 16-mile parade route that stretches from Ferndale to Pontiac. Michael O'Callaghan, executive vice president and COO of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau, said Friday that the Dream Cruise – which is expected to attract 1.5 million people – brings in approximately $56 million for businesses in the three-county area. "The real true …

I am on the "like it" side of the Dream Cruise. However, there is an aspect of it that is not "Oh well, it happens every year, it is out of our control, and there is nothing we can do about it." And that would be the city's decision to close down 9 mile from Planavon to Hilton. The city does not have to do this. They do it by choice. The Dream Cruise would still go through Ferndale via Woodward …   more ›

Woodward Dream Cruise a Nightmare for Some

Residents and business owners who are fed up with the event and the activity that precedes it sound off on Facebook.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is expected to attract 1.5 million people to a 16-mile stretch of the historic avenue this Saturday – with the build-up stretching out for days, weeks and months in advance – creating a nightmare of gridlock and noise that has inspired some residents and businesses along the route to voice their disdain on Facebook. Many of those who take issue with the classic car parade on social media say they soured on the event once it began to affect their qualilty of life beyond just the day of the cruise. The Cruisers Go Home page created by Pleasant Ridge resident Jeanne Ruzzin, for example, had nearly 200 likes Tuesday and lively conversation. Ruzzin said it's not the Dream Cruise that she and her neighbors along the …

I like this idea. I am a big car fan, but not being able to cross Woodward is a problem - especially considering there is a fire department at Woodward & 13 and Beaumont is just down 13 mile west of Woodward... this is a public safety issue & intersections should not be blocked.   more ›

The Magic Bag in Ferndale will accept submissions until noon Wednesday; the winner will receive a ticket prize pack and see their message on the venue's marquee this weekend.

Participants in the annual Woodward Dream Cruise slogan contest at The Magic Bag in Ferndale have until noon Wednesday to submit their best snarky saying about the classic car parade for a chance to see their words on the venue's marquee and win a ticket prize pack. The contest is intended to give residents and business owners along the route a way to voice their frustrations with the Saturday event that is expected to attract 1.5 million visitors to a 16-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue including Ferndale, Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Berkley, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. Magic Bag owner Jeremy Haberman said that, over the years, the venue has tried a variety of ways to capitalize on the event – including booking Bo Diddley; renting …
