Despite concerns from neighbors and the school superintendent, the planning commission says it has no choice but to approve the proposed 12,270-square-foot strip mall.
After using phrases such as “our hands are tied," planning commissioners voted to approve a shopping center next to Royal Oak High School. The approved plan calls for the demolition of the former Board of Education building, used most recently by Re/Max Partners, at the southeast corner of Crooks and Normandy. A new one-story strip mall with eight units will be built in its place. The request had been on hold since March, when commissioners asked A.F. Jonna Development & Management Co. to talk to the School District of the City of Royal Oak because of the development's proximity to more than 1,500 high school students. Athletic Director Jim Cole leads athletes in attempt to release an ambulance from a muddy field.
A track meet at Royal Oak High School had some extra excitement Tuesday night. Patch reader John Davids explains: During Tuesday’s track meet at Royal Oak High School, one of Southfield Lathrup’s female athletes required emergency medical attention. As the ambulance pulled off the track en route to the hospital, it became stuck in the deep mud. Athletes from Royal Oak High School, organized by Athletic Director Jim Cole, came to the rescue and attempted to free the vehicle. The heroic attempts by the team were unsuccessful as the vehicle sunk deeper and deeper into the muck. Another ambulance soon showed up and the girl was transferred to the hospital without further delay. The stuck ambulance was later extracted by a large tow truck. Do …

Tours, music presentations, displays and speeches kick off a very special celebration of Royal Oak High School.
School officials, students, parents and alumni gathered at Royal Oak High School Thursday for a centennial celebration. The one act festival at Royal Oak High School is free to the public.
The Royal Oak High School Drama Club will be hosting it's first ever student run one act festival this spring Friday April 19, outdoors in the courtyard of Royal Oak High School. Admission is Free. The Public is invited. All five of the One Act Plays are student directed and students actually wrote three of the five plays. The entire festival is student run and produced by members of the ROHS Drama Club. Students pitched their ideas for one act plays and skits, which ranged in time from 5 to 20 minutes, to the club officers who chose the final skits that would be performed on April 19th. The Royal Oak Board of Education approved the hire of Mike Van Camp as principal of Royal Oak High School on Thursday. Van Camp comes to Royal Oak from L’Anse Creuse Public Schools, where he has been principal at L’Anse Creuse Middle School–East since 2006. His resume also includes experience as a high school athletic director and assistant principal, as well as a middle school assistant principal. “I want you to know that I sought out Royal Oak and I know I said in the interview I probably would not have applied anywhere else," Van Camp told members of the school board. ”I'm coming from a really good place and I'm coming to a great place." New benches spruce up the glass corridor.
Royal Oak High School bustles with activity. But every once in a while, you need to sit down. Royal Oak High School officials report that there are a record number of students taking AP tests.
This May, a record number of Royal Oak High School students will take Advanced Placement (AP) tests. Royal Oak High School offers 13 Advanced Placement courses on-site at the school. The courses are offered in all core content areas and the popularity of the courses is on the rise. AP courses are college-level courses that students take as a part of their high school schedule. In both what is taught and how it is taught, AP classes are college courses. Exams administered each spring provide students enrolled in such courses the opportunity to earn college credit.
