After more than a decade of primarily covering crime, it's nice to turn to Patch for typically more-upbeat types of community news.

I'm author of two true-crime books. The first, Dead But Not Forgotten (August 2010, St. Martin's Press), covers the 1990 shooting death of a woman in a Clinton Township comic book store. While her husband was brought up on charges in 2007 and convicted in '08, the judge set aside the verdict and the case is still awaiting a second trial.

My second book is All-American Murder, set for an Aug. 30, 2011, release (also from St. Martin's Press). It covers the high-profile death of Yeardley Love, a star lacrosse player at the University of Virginia. (For that book, I used a Baltimore-area Patch reporter to help with research.) Love's ex-boyfriend, George Huguely V, is awaiting trial on charges of first-degree murder.

Aside from grisly crime writing and area freelancing, I'm also a wedding photographer. (Odd mix, I know.) I've been covering metro Detroit nuptials for Amber Hunt Photography (http://www.amberhuntphotography.com) for about six years.

I've previously worked with Teresa Mask, regional editor for about a dozen Patch sites (including Novi), who formerly was my editor at the Detroit Free Press. I've spent a lot of time studying and contemplating this new phase of online journalism, and I'm happy to be providing freelance community coverage to areas often overlooked by today's shrinking metropolitan newspapers.
