5 Doggone Ideas for Bringing Fido to the Woodward Dream Cruise

Dr. John Simon, of Woodside Animal Clinic, warns dog lovers not to bite off more than they can chew at the Dream Cruise.

Is it a good idea to your four-legged best friend Woodward Dream Cruise? It depends, according to a Royal Oak vet.

"I think bringing your dog to the Dream Cruise is a nice idea, but only if your dog is of the right mentality and you are a good citizen," said Dr. John Simon, of the Woodside Animal Clinic in Royal Oak.

You have to know your dog, Simon said.

Is Fido good around kids? Other dogs? Loud noises? If the answer is no, you might want to consider leaving your pet at home.

However, if your dog is good in a crowd and you are respectful of safety and cleanliness, Simon sees no reason to leave your best friend at home.

Don't bite off more than you can chew

Here are five suggestion for having a fun (and safe) time with your dog at the Woodward Dream Cruise.

1. Bring a short leash

"There are going to be lots of kids running around and it's impossible to see what's going on in all directions," Simon said.

A short leash will allow you to have better control of your pet.

2. Bring plastic bags

Be mindful of hygiene and bring something to pick up after your pet.

3.  Bring water

"You're going to need water and your dog will, too," Simon said.

Bring bottled water and a cup.

4. Look for shade

It's August and it is likely to be hot. When you stop, look for a place with shade or bring an umbrella to create your own shade for your pet. It's a rain or shine event, so bringing an umbrella is a good idea anyway.

5. Don't be a 'weekend warrior'

Know your dog's limits. If your pet is not used to walking three or four miles at a time, watch the Dream Cruise in a spot close to your home or where you parked so your dog can make it back.

"A big dog may be fine walking a long distance, but it may be a struggle for a smaller dog, especially if that dog is not used to getting a lot of exercise," Simon said.
