Entreprenuer Brings Home the Bacon

Producer Matt Peach has an idea that sizzles: Baconfest Michigan 2012.

Bacon lip balm? Bacon hand sanitizer? Bacon ice cream?

“Bacon is a cultural movement,” said Matt Peach of Livonia, the producer of . “It’s one of two food cults. The other one is Nutella" chocolate hazelnut spread.

Peach said he developed a yearning for a festival of pork strips about a year and a half ago and started looking for one online.

“I thought someone else is going to eventually do this. Why not us?” he said. So he came up with the concept to have a food tasting event that revolved around bacon — not pulled pork, not barbeque, not ribs — just bacon.

Peach, an entrepreneur and film producer, has never produced an event. He says his bacon festival will not be like going to a five-star restaurant, but it’ll be no state fair either.

“There aren’t going to be any all-you-can-eat contests,” he said. “It’s a culinary event and no one will leave hungry.”

Peach envisions Baconfest to be something akin to , the charity preview with:

  • 30-40 restaurants serving a dish with bacon
  • chefs preparing something exciting, fun and creative
  • no repeat dishes — every restaurant will have something unique
  • live music entertainment

Is Peach preoccupied with bacon? No, he said.

“It’s sort of a family tradition to cook bacon every Sunday morning, but I am not obsessed with it," Peach said. "I do love it though."
