Mauled by a pet raccoon likely after the milk in a bottle propped in her mouth as an infant, Charlotte has been through multiple surgeries to repair and reconstruct  her nose, lip and most of her face under the skilled guidance of Dr. Kongkrit Chaiyasate at Royal Oak’s Beaumont Hospital.

Thursday’s surgery to attach the new ear structure, carved from cartilage taken from her rib in April, went well, Chaiyasate told the Detroit Free Press. The ear structure was visible under her forearm, where it was placed to allow skin and tissue to develop around it.

The surgery was the last major procedure for the plucky 12-year-old from Spring Lake, who was in “good spirits,” said her mother, Sharon Ponce.

Chaiyasate said a skin graft will be performed in about a month to restore the are where the ear structure had been inserted. If necessary, Chaiyasate will continue to shape the ear, he told the newspaper.

As she matures, Charlotte will have more surgeries, including laser treatments, but none of them are major, Chaiyasate said in earlier reports.
