VIDEO: Man Arrested on Multiple Charges After Fleeing From Police

Police use tire deflation devices to stop the vehicle.

Thanks to the teamwork of the Royal Oak Police Department, Ferndale Police Department, Michigan State Police and Berkley Police Department a dangerous pursuit involving a Redford Township man came to a safe conclusion early Monday morning.

Martin Markowitz, 42, from Redford Township, was arrested in Ferndale and given multiple citations in an incident that began in Royal Oak and involved four different police agencies, said Royal Oak Police Chief Corrigan O'Donohue.

"All of the jurisdictions worked very well together," O'Donohue said. "One of the reasons the pursuit ended safely was having the cooperation of neighboring departments. Criminals don't know city borders."

Royal Oak Police report that at approximately 4:25 a.m. officers observed a driver in white Ford pick up truck, in the area of 14 Mile and Coolidge. When the driver saw the officers, police say he turned off his headlights and entered a residential neighborhood west of Coolidge in an attempt to elude police and a pursuit ensued.

The vehicle continued through the neighborhood and fled southbound on Woodward from Normandy reaching speeds approaching 90 miles per hour. Neighboring police departments blocked east/west traffic at intersections to avoid other vehicles from being "t-boned" in the pursuit, O'Donohue said.

An attempt was made to stop the vehicle at 11 Mile and Woodward when a Royal Oak officer successfully deployed a tire deflation device and disabled two tires on the passenger side of the vehicle.  Despite having two deflated tires, the driver kept rolling south on Woodward into Ferndale.

At Woodward and Nine Mile, a Ferndale officer successfully deployed a similar set of spike strips disabling the remaining two tires.  Police report the vehicle eventually stopped at Woodward and Jewell in Ferndale and the driver taken into custody without incident.

A search of the vehicle revealed stolen property from the Royal Oak Meijer store located at 5150 Coolidge.

O'Donohue noted a training officer spotted the suspicious truck.

"It's a good example of how our officers are out there at 4 a.m. aggressively pursuing criminals," O'Donohue said. "And it's also an example of why good training is so important."

The driver, Markowitz, has a lengthy criminal history, according to police. He was arrested and charged with: fleeing and eluding a police officer second degree, larceny in a building, retail fraud first degree, driving while license suspended and reckless driving.

Markowitz was arraigned before Judge Terrence Brennan of the 44th District Court. Bond was set at $100,000 - no 10 percent. A pre-trial conference is set for Oct. 4 at 9 a.m.
