Other nearby cities have experienced similar incidents, according to police. Investigators are working with the other communities to identify the thieves involved.

Royal Oak Police advise residents take the following precautions to protect vehicles from thieves:

  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. If you have no other option, secure your valuables in the trunk or in an area where they will not be visible.
  • If possible, park your vehicle in a well lit area. Avoid parking your vehicle in areas that offer thieves a place to hide.
  • Make sure your vehicle is locked. Many thefts occur as a result of the owner leaving their vehicle unlocked.
  • Do not leave power cords for computers, cell phones or GPS units in plain view. These are indicators there may be electronic devices in your vehicle and will make your vehicle a likely target.
  • Many vehicles are broken into with the intent of stealing the vehicle itself. Visible anti-theft devices, like steering wheel locks, steering column collars or brake pedal locks, may discourage the would-be thief from breaking in and attempting to steal your vehicle.
Call the police if you see a suspicious person or vehicle in your neighborhood. If possible, get a description and license plate number.
