Fight the Fireworks Factory in your Royal Oak Neighborhood
As many of you may know, Ronnie Babbie of West Bloomfield has plans to open a Fireworks store (Fireworks Factory) carrying items such as artillery shells in a residential area across from a community center and near an elementary school. The building in Royal Oak is located at Lincoln and Campbell, and is owned by the same owners of Fresh Approach, MM Development.
The citizens of the city are rightfully concerned about this development due to proximity to children (elementary school, boys and girls club, and community center), potential increase in crime, danger due to the explosive firework inventory, increase in transient traffic, and potential damage to property values.
Although, the planning commission and city council are completely against this development, their hands are tied due to public act 526 or the "Michigan Fireworks Act of 2011". This act does not allow the city to enforce any codes other than that of the state - in fact the city asked for the fireworks factory to install a fire suppression system, however legally Ronnie Babbie refused as it was not required by state code.
