'Click It or Ticket' Campaign Targets Unbuckled Drivers, Passengers

Royal Oak police and other law enforcement agencies will be looking for motorists who aren't buckled up during campaign that runs through June 5.

A busy season of barbecues, graduation parties and trips Up North kicks off this weekend and along with it the national Click It or Ticket campaign.

Officers from Royal Oak and more than 200 local police departments, sheriff offices and Michigan State Police posts in 35 counties will work to enforce the state's seat belt law through June 5. 

Michigan law requires:

  • All front seat passengers to be buckled up
  • All passengers under age 16 to be buckled up, in all seating positions
  • All children under age 8 to be in an approved child safety seat or booster seat, in all seating positions, unless 4' 9" tall.

"Michigan has a primary seat belt law, which means law enforcement can stop and ticket motorists solely for not being buckled up," Michigan State Police say on its website.

Those who do not comply could face a $65 fine.

The campaign, which is federally funded, will use daytime seat belt enforcement zones and nighttime roving patrols. 

In Royal Oak, officers will be in the following areas:

  • Friday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.:  Northbound Coolidge between Woodward and 13 Mile
  • Tuesday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.:  Southbound Coolidge between 14 Mile and Normandy
  • Wednesday, 3-7 p.m.: Southbound Crooks between Normandy and 13 Mile
  • Thursday, 11 p.m.-3 a.m.: Eastbound 11 Mile between Main and Troy
  • June 3, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.:  Southbound Crooks between Normandy and 13 Mile
  • June 4, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.:  Eastbound 11 Mile between Main and Troy
